PD Dressing Rash

After a few weeks on PD, my dressing is giving me rash (the part around the sticky). I told my nurse and she told me to try using tape and gauze but that made it worse -- the glue from the tape is stuck on my skin. I had a very difficult time trying to figure out how to get it off (rubbing with Exsept antiseptic solution is painful on rash woulds). Now I put back on the dressing but still have no good solution to my rash issue. Anyone have suggestions to make it rash less?

I too had that problem but my pd nurse suggested mepilex border the hospital wouldn't supply it because it cost more than their dressings so they told me to see my GP who did prescribe it for me really good dressing I used it for two and a half years till I had my transplant eight weeks ago its padded and it doesn't stick to you or leave sticky marks not sure if you can get it where you are but if you can try it it will stop any rash

Hey, I used this product before. Mepilex border may be covered by your insurance company but if not it is available at Amazon.com or any medical supply company. Good luck with your PD.

Your nurse should be able to provide you with Adhesive Tape Removal Pads to remove that black sticky residue from the tape. They look like alcohol pads. But, contain no alcohol. They're oily like mineral oil. Also, you should be cleaning around your exit site every single day and applying an Antibotic cream/jelly form called Gentamicin. Which keeps uoi from getting a crust-like rash around the exit site. I hope this helps.

I’m allergic to most adhesives. In saying that, I use paper tape & gauze as they use a lighter type of adhesive.

I too, have the problem of getting a rash from the paper tape around the gauze dressing over my catheter site. Thanks for the info. I will let you know if I hear of anything else, or if mepilex works for me. Good luck with your healing.

I'm using medipore dressing at the moment. So I ordered small amounts of mediplex and tegaderm dressings from amazon to try out.

In the meantime, I found this sensitive-skin tape from target. It seems better so far, at least the glue isn't coming off.

I had the same problem. That rash itches like crazy! I tried a different kind of tape that was supposed to be "hypoallergenic," but that stuff didn't stick very well. I have always used the gauze and micropore paper tape. I would try turning the gauze so that the tape is not in the same place every time and that helped. What finally cured it, though, was taking off the gauze at night while I sleep and letting the air get to it. (This was approved by my nurse.) Now, the rash is totally gone! You might try that, but check with your health care team beforehand.

When you let it air, do you have the gentamicin cream on it?

So I went back on medipore after trying a few things that didn't secure well. I started having some small rash dots around the exit site which was scaring me so I went back to the medipore. However, the moment I went back, the rashes around the glue part came back fast. I showed my nurse and she suggested I try out a large tegaderm and also asked me to stop the exsept solution and use soap water instead. I tried that yesterday and the rash from the glue and exit site seems bit better, BUT now I have blister around one of the outside edge of the tegaderm dressing. Has anyone had a blister around dressing before? The blister is itchy and a little painful.

Yes to all of that. When i first noticed it, i was broken out in a square under the gauze: little red dots that would turn into blisters if i itched it. When i took the gauze off at night, i really didnt worry about applying more Gentamycin. My exit site was completely healed at that time. I wouldn’t do it if youre still healing.

I just started APD 2 months ago and I’ve got rashes all over the exit site. It itches like crazy and When I scratch it oozes. I have complained about this to my nurse but they keep changing my dressing and nothing changes. I’m frustrated and just feel like ripping the tube out. I’m fed up. I air it out sometimes by covering the hole with just gauze and paper tape, this dries up the oozing rash and it starts recovering but when I need to go out, I have to cover it up with dressing and the rashes come back oozing again. 😭😭😭
