Starting to Deal with a new normal

Was recently diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease (20% kidney functioning) Am now on a very strict low potassium diet Drinking lots of water. Can’t eat any of the things I love to eat. My nephrologist says it is unlikely that my kidney function will improve. I am 76 years old and have had type 2 diabetes for 20 years. I have heard that some people do get improved kidney functioning. Is that a rare occurrence? Dave.

The author of "Plant-fed Kidneys" by Jennifer Moore, RD, an experienced renal dietitian, cites patients of her's who did improve remaining kidney function by low protein, plant based diet. I'm 80. I have Type 2 diabetes, but by losing weight and increasing exercise, I no longer require medication. AC1 has been 5.2-5.6. Best wishes!

I agree with the post of DIXIDUDE39. Some are able to retard the progression to dialysis by following a strict regimen. For me, I gave up the meats in 2005 and also lost the weight. More importantly, I followed my lab parameters and my blood pressure/ weight / fluid status very closely. Having a caring doctor to guide you along in this process is very essential. Thanks for sharing your question.....
