PD Drain Pain

After drain, I get 2 kinds of pains:1) catheter pain, 2) punch in stomach pain.

The catheter pain usually from end of draining process and goes away in a few minutes. Occasionally comes back after I urinate or if I sit or stand in strange position.

The punch in stomach feel can last for several hours after a drain. Making it hard to want to eat or move around. This lasts so long that sometimes I feel I don’t have any pain free break before the next exchange.

I am still quite new to PD (doing manual still). My nurse thinks this might go away as my body gets more used to it. Anyone with similar experience? Also how to deal with pain in meantime?

I sometimes have pain at the end of the drain cycle. I'm fairly used to it so it no longer distressed me. Occasionally, I have severe pain throughout the drain cycle. Also, during this, the draining becomes very slow. It's seems to be when I'm constipated so taking a laxative fixes the problem.

Drain pain is very common in PD. But there are a few things you can do to help lessen the effects. Since you’re still on manuals- you can easily control most of it, the minute you start filing the pain, clamp off....don’t wait to see if you’re going to get any more out, the longer it (the catheter) stays open, the more “pull” you will feel. If you have transferred to the cycler, have your nurse set it to tidal, or add another cycle....of course when I start feeling the pull on the final drain, I shut my catheter to off (I’m generally still in bed) and then go to the machine and bypass the rest of the cycle. But that will depend on your prescription. I am totally dry during the day, but if you carry fluid during the day this will not work for you.
