How do you feel after going on the renal diet? It’s like learning to cook all over again? What do you drink besides water?

I started on a renal diet about 2 1/2 months ago. It was very challenging because I didn’t cook and I balked at the diet. However I found many recipes on davita.com that I can cook to make different types of foods. I do drink one cup of coffee a day with nondairy creamer and decaf coffee. Occasionally I drink a small amount of diet root beer. Otherwise it’s water. I never drank so much water in my life, but now it’s second nature to me. Best of luck, Jackie

The prescribed CKD diet did make me feel better. It was a challenge at first but have gotten used to it. I did find recipes for CKD on Davita to be helpful. I also modify some recipes to suit my need.

So I am just starting my renal food plan, working with an RD. This is a permanent lifestyle change, not just a diet. The goal is to increase my quality of life and longevity. I am giving up all meats, poultry, dairy and eggs to go on a low protein, low salt menu. I will still eat limited seafood and whole grains. However, if you have diabetes or other problems this may not be right for you. My alternative to plain water is organic herbal teas of various flavors including ginger, hibiscus and other teas. Moist fruits like grapes and watermelon reduce my need for water. There is no alcohol that is safe for someone with CKD. Sodas are also unhealthy, especially dark colas.

I drink organic herbal decaffeinated teas with trivia.
