Pre Lab question...

So I'm getting a fresh set of labs done on Friday (🤞🏻) and I've definitely heard all of the talk about making sure that you're properly and sufficiently hydrated before you go which I always do. 2 1/2 to 3 liters of water. My question is, is it possible to be "too hydrated" before your labs, thus affecting your #s in a negative way?? Thanks in advance.

Unless you see a urologist for bladder issues that isn't likely to happen. A nephrologist will provide you with the amount of water to drink because you do get some liquid from the foods you eat. The amount will change as you move through the various stages. We tell folks to stay hydrated at all times, especially before labs to make the labs come out closer to normal. The same goes for exercise. Follow your normal routine for exercise and don't do anything overly strenuous for the two or three days before the labs.

Stay safe.

Good advice. That's basically what I've always done before a lab. Just wanted to make sure I wasnt missing out in any other opportunities. Thanks and stay well.

Hi GeeMoney.Yes, you can be too hydrated, Especially if you are doing a urine test. So drinking copious quantities of water before is not good. Just have your normal amount, but also make sure if you need to fast that you are not having sugar or cream in your coffee. I have a glass of water 8 oz. or so, about an hour or more before labs.

Oh wow. I usually have like 2 to 3 liters before my test. I book it at 1:30pm so it gives me time to get my fluids in. Maybe I should reconsider my strategy. Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

Agree with advice given. Please don't overdo hydration as that can affect your electrolyte levels in your lab results among other things. Insufficient intake of water will do that too. Simply check with your doctor as to what the your normal daily intake of fluid should be.
