Does anyone else struggle with Pain in the upper abdomen at the base of the rib cage?

Hi everyone! I continue to find encouragement and hope as we share with each other. Last Fall I was diagnosed with CKD STAGE 3a , with a GFR of 48 and Creatinine level of 1.17. An enhanced renal ultrasound in April came back normal and an endoscopy by my gastroenterologist showed nothing beyond a small erosion in my stomach (biopsy of it came back normal) but I have been struggling with pain in my upper left abdomen at the base of my ribs for nearly a year. My PCP, UROLOGIST, AND NEPHROLOGIST never seemed too concerned about it as I have been seeing them since November of last year. With my Nephrologist's approval, my Gastroenterologist has recently placed my on a short term treatment of Omeprazole 20 mg/day. It seemed to help at first for about a week but have struggled a couple days again ... thinking it is related to foods I eat but can't determine WHAT it is! I have found I may struggle with this for a couple days to a week straight, with perhaps a 2-7 day reprieve, then the pain comes back. Have any of YOU struggled with pain like this? If so, any determination of the cause or how to deal with it?

I was having similar pain in that general area. From previous ultrasounds, I knew I had gallstones. I took that information with me to an appointment with a general surgeon. I had my gallbladder removed early last October. The pain is gone and I'm doing well. There are other things it could be. You need to find a doctor who will treat you more aggressively.

Best of luck.

Hi CKD 2019,

I also had similar pain at and slightly just under my ribcage in the back with an upset stomach for 8 months.

In my case, it was from an allergy to Atrouvastatin

( Lipitor).

You mentioned one medication that you were prescribed, but not others.

Look the side effects up on Drugs.com, but in all honesty, I would

give your doctor a call and make him/ her aware of your symptoms. You should not have to suffer in any way.

Please let us know what the outcome is!

Bet

Hi CKD,

I too had that issue and like Mr. Kidney, it was gallstones. And it was hard to figure what foods triggered it at first. Fatty food definitely did. But then it got that just about anything could set it off. And the pain was mild to had to go to the hospital for a pain shot. Once I had it out, I was fine for the most part. So have your gall bladder checked out.

The other thing to think about is that the large intestine takes a big swing up and right under the chest and it could be related to gas or a blockage. I would keep pursuing the doctors to find out what is going on.

I also suffer pain in that area that comes every couple of months and last a few days to a week..worse after eating...tests showed no gallstones at the time of testing but I did have dilated gallbladder ducts. All of my blood work for liver came back fine though. I would ask your doctor to check your gallbladder . Sometimes you really need to keep on them to get to the proper diagnosis. I wish you well!

My family member has slipping rib syndrome. Sounds like you need a new doctor to evaluate the whole area. Best of luck to you
