General Practitioner - the local gatekeeper for medical services and, typically, the first point of contact with the NHS. In the US, the term "family doctor" is roughly the same.

A GP is a family physician. This is the first person you will see when you are needing a doctor's services. GPs are generally grouped together in what we call 'surgeries'. These GPs are a part of our National Health Service, so if you are an eligible citizen you will not be charged money for your appointment but will pay for your visits through National Insurance payments and taxation from employment. If you are not eligible, you may still have a consultation, but will have to pay a fee. If you need more specialized treatment, the GP will refer you on to a hospital or specialist centre.

I'll assume this is a follow-on question to that of 'what is a GP'. For those who are eligible, there is no personal cost for treatment, except for the deductions made from your salary, through income tax and national insurance payments and a contribution made for all prescription drugs.
