I hate sympathy it does not help. People want understanding and empathy. Sympathy does not help when someone needs to change their lifestyle to match their abilities. They need to be shown want they cannot do and have alternatives that they can do shown to them. This is a lot harder work than sympathy and also takes longer.
It is very easy to forget that when someone experiences something traumatic or receive an injury, the abilities one has can vanish and not be regained. New abilities have to be learnt taking into account lost ability
that's a lovely one - as a trained psychotherapist and also a current mental health outpatient it is exactly what I would want first of all. Then empathy, care and understanding, then some practical solutions or honesty if there are not any. Most of all I would like support and that may be just going on being there.
