Can a doctor decide what conditions he will and will not prescribe for on the NHS? Are all GPs bound by the same rules on this?

My doctor has announced that he will no longer prescribe hayfever medication. He also charged me by private prescription for a toe infection, instead of an NHS prescription. I am a pensioner.

Hayfever seems to be a bit discretional (depends on whether you're asking for over the counter meds or not). But I don't understand charging for a toe infection. He sounds like a meanie to me.

There's a useful guide to prescriptions (in England if that applies) from Boots here boots.com/en/Pharmacy-Healt...

This just about sums things up for me - your doctor perhaps has private health cover for himself and his family!

I wonder if it is a condition where the medication from a pharmacist would be cheaper than on the NHS? If so, this should have been explained.

Possibly, but as pensioners we don't pay for NHS prescriptions!

As a pensioner even though you are not charged for the prescription, however your GP is and where the chemist can provide you with a cheaper alternative the GP is charged the cost of the prescription. What he should have given you is the name of the cheaper product with an explanation. This is what my own GP has advised in the past.
