My body failing me

Hi all

I don’t know if anyone has experienced this, my breast milk has suddenly dried up. I am absolutely devastated I feel like I’m letting my son down! He’s now nearly 11 weeks.

What I’ve been told is 6/10 times this happens to women with PCOS & I should have been on a medicine when he was first born to help. As a last resort I’ve been put on Domperidone which is meant to jump start my milk production. I’m only allowed to take it for a week but should know by 48 hours of starting if it’s worked & if it hasn’t then that’s it.

Even though my last post I had said how I was struggling with the constant feeding I never wanted this decision taken away from me. I feel like my body has let me down doing the most important thing it needed to do for me!!

Have you been trying to hand express? Pumps never really worked with me, but might work for you. Also do you drink plenty of fluids yourself? If you are dehydrated your milk supply will stop. It does happen sometimes and unfortunately there isn't always much you can do about it. In the end the important thing is your baby is fed and growing well

Unfortunately it’s not how I’m feeding or expressing it’s just something that happens to women with PCOS

Yeah I know at the end of the day as long as he is fed that’s what’s best.

Don't be hard on yourself!

Your body did not fail you - it gave you your beautify baby! ❤️Breast or formula milk - milk is milk! X

Have you contacted your local La Leche League support group. I had difficulties breastfeeding my babies due to tongue tie and LLL were fab at supporting me. Have you seen a lactation consultant? Don't just speak to your GP or health visitor, seek expert advise from health professionals that specialise in breastfeeding. My GP told me some women can't breastfeed and I was one of them, I fed one of my babies until she was 10 months and the other one 13 months - GPs are not experts in breastfeeding. All the best, if you're really determined, you can do this! X

Yeah it was a lactation specialist I spoke to she was the one that spoke about the tablets. So fingers crossed they help she advised that was pretty much my only hope as no one had advised of my issue xoxo

Find your local LLL group too, lovely supportive ladies. Keep going, keep trying to feed for as long as you want to, but remember you are not failing your baby if a medical condition is stopping your milk supply.

A friend of mine was really I'll after having her second and needed to go on meds which she couldn't bf while taking, hardest decision ever, but she needed to be well so she could look after her family.

You're doing an amazing job, the best you can for your baby. X

Keep baby close and have as much skin to skin contact as you can. I had dried up for 6 hours once and was in shock. I had breastfed and expressed and it took a while to produce some more milk. I ended up persisting and breast feeding for almost 4&1/2 years as it was so nice and much appreciated by me and baby.

So sorry I never got this reply! Drs day there’s nothing I can do. Something should have been flagged up and seen to before he was born!
