Hello all

Is anyone or has anyone been on Labetalol while breast feeding? My 11 day old seems to be having really bad gripey pains and the GP said to persevere - any suggestions?

It sort of seems cruel - but then introducing formula may have a worse effect

Try a bit of infacol before each feed. It takes a couple of days to get in the system, but it worked wonders for us. Though I'm not on labetalol, but I did breastfeed for 13 weeks. 😊 xx

I was given it during labour and I had to carry on taking it. I asked th doctor if it would affect my son through feeding and it's not thought to! My son does suffer from colic which I think is just a coincidence as he is nearly five months now and I stopped taking it at four or five weeks!

The best thing to do if you ever aren't sure is to email Wendy jones at the breast feeding network she is their pharmacist. If you google that her webpage comes up. Or google Breast feeding network drugs in breast milk, or on Facebook. There are fact sheets (which cover loads of stuff including cough and colds meds to surgery) or a telephone number or Wendy will reply (usually pretty fast!)

Or you can look it up on lactmed but Wendy usually gives a more straight forward answer! Having a quick look on there though suggests it's ok :)

Hi I had to take labetolol with my last 3 kids and didn't have a problem however each baby and mother is different. It also depends on the dose that you are taking. I am aware that the information leaflet advice against it. To me it's a personal choice how you manage both BP and ensuring that baby ok.

Hi there, I was on Labetarol after my baby because my blood pressure was too high 110/190 in that range. Took it for a month while lowering the dose until my BP went back to normal. I was breastfeeding baby and was worried about the side effects, I didn't notice any effects in the baby however she developed Colic later, that had no relation to the meds at all. I didn't want to take the meds however my GP pointed out that there was a high number of ladies getting a stroke due to high BP after child birth and can't care for their babies, that was more than enough reason to continue until it normalised, hope this helps, all the best.......

Sorry forgot to mention that I tried lots of things like infacol and gripe water later on when the colic set in but they didn't work until my neighbour recommended orange blossom water. This worked for us, only gave 1.25 mls before the feed. Google it as well, it's been used in Egypt and other Asian countries for ages. Worked for us and its a natural product, all the best
