Sea salt in the bath will help with healing. I had a tear with each of my babies, the first was more severe and it took around 5-6 weeks before it wasn't so sore. It'll get better every day, take it easy while you're healing - over doing it won't help :-) x

I had an epistomy during the birth of my 1st child in 2008.

I was told just to keep the area as clean as possible as I also suffered with an 3rd degree tear in the same area.

" it's honestly funny what us women seem to forget" as my 2nd birth experience ( 3 months ago) was a totally different situation.

Hey, I had a 2nd degree internal tear with stitches. I didn't want to go anywhere near this whilst healing but was paranoid about it being dirty or infected so my friend suggested this.

Waist high bath, glass of milk, 1 drop lavender oil & 1 drop of tea tree oil. I had one every morning, I loved it & healed well X

Took 6 weeks to heal, keep the area clean and dry, I remember the MD telling me to use a hair dryer to make sure the stitches are perfectly dry. Good luck

Hello! Mine took about a month till it was totally healed and no pain at all. I rinsed myself with warm water after a wee and patted dry rather than wiping. Also has a warm bath every morning and night. Just plain. Water, no soap or anything. I was very bruised and swollen after forceps so just sitting was very painful and uncomfortable so I folded a hand towel and sat on that in the bath. Xx

Second that - tore badly with my first (and second a little bit) - pouring a jug of luke warm water over yourself as you are weeing dilutes the wee (especially helpful in the morning when it is more concentrated) and it stings less. Lavender (tea tree too if you skin usually copes okay with it) blended with milk and added to your bath - antiseptic and soothing. Sounds obvious but sitting on a soft cushion - you can get special 'valley' ones but I used a neck pillow for a while which worked for me. Take it easy but do stay mobile as gentle exercise increases blood flow and so advances the healing process. I would say it was a lot better after a few weeks and no pain at all by about 4-5 but a straightforward sort of tear generally tends to heal a bit faster than a cut.

I've had one episiotomy with my first and one tear with my second 4 weeks ago. Healed in 2 weeks with each and took arnica which is natural remedy to aid swelling and bruising and had Epsom salts in my bath. Not sure if I just had neat openings but my tear wasn't stitched and even that healed nicely so I'm telling everyone about arnica!!!!
