Have you guys heard anything about taking Oxybutynin long term and cognitive disfuntion? Cause I seriously don't need to lose any more brain cells than I have 🙁 🤣

I have heard that is a side effect. I started this med over a month ago and I am doing fine with no bad side effects. I know others on the group have had that side effect.

Yes, it’s an anti-cholinergic so it can cause some cog impairment.

I'm going to have to check into something else then. I have been on it for 6yrs 🙁 I don't need the extra help 🙃🤣😂 How are you doing? 🤗💕🌠

I’m good other than this thing called MS 🤪Maybe it’s cog effects are minimal for you? You have to weigh the benefits vs. side effects.

There is a newer med for urinary symptoms called myrbetriq. No cog effects but can slightly inc. BP and not generic $$$.

My cog is good as long as I stay focused, it's just the focusing and not remembering and.. look squirrel! Where was I? 😂Ugh! BP is always good, if not, give me 5 mins and it will be!☺️🤗💕🌠

Yep. I can relate to those cog symptoms. Huh? I just put the pizza box in the fridge and threw out the pizza 🍕 or something like that 🫣

There's a newer overactive bladder drug that is very similar to Myrbetriq. My insurance made me switch to the newer one, Gemtesa, because it has less drug interactions and doesn't raise blood pressure. At first I was mad insurance was dictating my meds (by refusing to cover Myrbetriq), but now I'm actually happy I switched! It works sooooo much better than Myrbetriq for me!

Gemtesa does have a 12 month copay card, which helps as well. I highly recommend for anyone to discuss the newer med with a dr if they have an insurance plan that will cover it.

i've been on it for over a year and no new cog fog

"Research suggests that one of the most popular OAB medications, oxybutynin, may harm brain health and increase dementia risk."

"Patients with oxybutynin, solifenacin, or tolterodine exposure were significantly more likely to develop dementia during the 6-year follow-up period (P<0.001)."

I’ve taken it on and off for years. Honestly , I haven’t noticed any significant changes, good or bad. Incontinence is close to the top of the list of MS symptoms that is well, |~<€££^^##!

I also take Baclofen is really think that it almost cancels out the efficacy of Oxybutynin. I even gave up my beloved coffee a few months ago! Been drinking it since I was young. Now I’m almost 58. Sorry I digress.

So those are my thoughts in a nutshell.

No, I don't know what it is, or what it is used to treat But, now you have my curousity aroused, I will do some Linda research and see what I can learn. Of course, I won't remember why I wanted to know, but I will have learned something new...

Look up anti-cholinergic drugs. Oxybutynin and vesicare are both in that category amongst other common drugs. All carry a higher risk of dementia.

I’m 62 have MS 31 years. I have been on oxybutenin for about 10 yrs. I am fine cognitively!

It’s a matter of a higher risk of dementia. That doesn’t mean that everyone who takes these meds will in fact get dementia from them. You may be perfectly fine on it. Personally I decided the risk wasn’t worth it since MS has already damaged my brain. I don’t need to be taking drugs that have the potential to add to that.
