I think I need to go back to Suzie Homemaker 101 class. Yesterday I was making my signature "20 lb" NY style cheesecake. I have made many of these cakes without any problems... Until yesterday!! I mixed up the graham cracker crust put in the pan & was ready to put it in the oven for it's baking time of 10 minutes. Just as I opened the oven door I saw the sugar still in the measuring cup on the counter. Ugh... so I put the crumbs back in the bowl & added the sugar, put it all in the pan & baked it. When I took it out of the oven it was smoking & the sides all melted down into the bottom. By this time the smoke alarm is going off & I was standing at the stove looking at my cake crust scratching my head trying to figure out what happened. I double checked the recipe & I had put double the butter in the mix. I realized my brain had taken 3/4 cup to 3 sticks of butter. When I was pouring in the butter I thought it looked like too much so I stopped & left just a little less than half in the measuring cup. So I thought I had averted a disaster. Nope. So I decided to wait until today to bake the cake, start fresh & shouldn't have any problems right? WRONG!! I hadn't even started putting the ingredients together for the crust when I had set off both smoke alarms in the house, I live in a mobile home, which I had never done before in my life. I've burnt stuff & set off the kitchen one but not one clear down at the other end of the house! So once the oven was safe to approach I realized that butter had leaked out of my pan onto the oven floor. It was a spring- load pan & I know I need to wrap it in foil before baking cuz they leak, I didn't. While waiting for the smoke to clear & the alarms to stop I found out I was a week early in making the cake in the first place! I just sat down & laughed & laughed. It was a comedy of errors & had I watched it happen in a TV show or a movie I would have been laughing at the cook. So I have taken the rest of the day off & watched some house design shows. Thanks for listening!

Yeah I was afraid to open the oven door again!π ππ€£ But I had my big girl panties on & opened the door, wiped the butter off the bottom, closed the oven door & turned on the self cleaning button & killed what ever was in there!ππ€ͺ
Oh my, what a disaster! π±π€¦ββοΈπ€£ 3rd time is a charm, right?
I am so glad I'm not the only one doing things like this! The kids will never let me me live down the year we made a giant pot of green tomato mincemeat. I was feeling nostalgic. Hadn't had any since my grandmother went senile many years before, and I found a recipe that was very similar to hers. Money was tight, so we carefully chopped the apples and tomatoes, added the raisins and vinegar, closely followed the recipe....After letting it stew for several hours, we made our pies. They baked beautifully! And after one bite each, we realized that we'd completely forgotten the sugar. The kids named them "pickle pies", and they've managed to mention them on every holiday ever since. No matter what I've baked after that, the first words they ask are "Did you remember the sugar?".
That's a whale/wail of a tale, worthy of an Lucy and Ethel episode! It's wonderful (and so healthy) when we, like you, are able to laugh with and at ourselves rather than let anything flame into anger (setting off our internal smoke alarms.)
I did something similar a few weeks ago. Tried making a fruit quick bread. Instead of bread, I had a fruit soup that spilled out all over the oven. I forgot to add the flour. Couldn't try again that day as I had used the last of the apples I had. I'll try it again later.
Well, as long as we're exchanging recipes...., I threw stew meat in a pot of soup I was making along with the white, plastic blood soaker upper thingy that's in the bottom of the package.
Cooked that right up.

OMG! I did that with chicken.. gross isnt it?
I am glad that you could laugh at yourself because now I donβt feel bad at laughing with you. Thank you for making me laugh π
OMGOODNESS! things like this are the reason I no longer cook anything more complicated than Mac & cheese. I simply can no longer follow the recipes no matter how careful I am due to cognitive decline. (Converting 3/4 C. to 3 sticks) I have also baked something for 2 hours instead of 20 mins. it's maddening
You are brave! I buy my crusts and make the "insides" from scratch. Crusts are more than I want to deal with!
Hope everything works out better two weeks good luck!
sorry about all of that but this is something i bet all have had happen ...i know i have messed up stuff that i had made for years but MS has it's own version i guess for doing some of the cooking ...hahahahhahhahah...i do the same thing instead of crying just laugh for it is not something to get all upset over...just maddening for we want to make something special for someone ...oh well ..they just look at me like what has happened ...hahahahhaha...so we do laugh ....loved your story ...have a great day and maybe when you try again on a different day she will be a sleep and will let you make it just fine....loads of enjoyment ....much happiness....
It is very maddening but it was also a good lesson for me. If I can't give my full attention to something then I shouldn't do it right then. That didn't used to be a problem but lately it has been. So it was actually a blessing.π
i know what you are talking about ...but i still can screw it up ...so mading for i use to love to cook and did a great job at it ...same with my sewing sometimes it all works great and sometimes i wander why i even try ...so mading ....this is my main complaint about MS is the cooking and sewing screw ups from it and now can't type...hahhahaha,...deal with right ....love and much happiness...just live the life we still have ....
Great story! Good laughter for the soul.

having a sense of humour works wonders! i remember when i first started using store scooters. i was trying to go around someone and knocked over a 3 level display of nail varnish! at first people didn't know how to react, but i burst out laughing. i couldn't help it. the people around me were tentative, but ended up laughing, too. i told the store manager so no one got hurt and i got a good laugh out of it.π
