We did too. Classic for living 3 miles from school at 5000'. We'd cover our books with paper bags and hold under our coats. We didn't have big pieces of plastic unless the dry cleaner supplied each of us with a dress sized piece if thin plastic which we had to take great care not to tear it! Hated winter except for ice skating on the frozen river! Honestly!
