Not sure, Leslie. This might be a conversation that you can have with your health care provider? :-D

There are studies going on it may help the symptoms of MS. I was wondering if any one took them and how it helped.

Good point, Leslie. There are some in this forum that promote and maintain a healthy gut-i-tude. Perhaps a probiotic might do that. :-D

Here’s another example of using them with some guidance. Some are useless, and others can actually cause problems for some people or those with certain problems. They certainly aren’t a panacea.

I read this same thing somewhere too. I do not take them, I have always had a pretty happy gut (other than mild constipation that doesn't need medicine to manage) so never needed to try prior to MS and I hate taking pills so don't add anything unless I know I really need it.

I would discuss with your doctor as they hopefully have the most current info on which ones are safe to take and if it worth spending your hard earned money on 😁

I should have added that some people find certain strains help them with certain conditions. I wish everything worked well for everyone. I also wish there were some way of knowing for sure that what the label claims is in the product actually is. Price isn’t a sure indicator, unfortunately.

Yep!

They are a helpful supplement for those who are unable to drop the kids off at the pool.

Happy Euphemism Tuesday!

I use organic miso, sauerkraut, yogurts, apple cider vinegar with mother and raw organic vegetables. I also use a probiotic supplements' on occasion. I am not sure it helps my MS but my stomach feels better and my energy seems higher. Good luck

Those are pre biotics, I think...

I thought fermented foods had the live bacteria and yeasts in them. I was hoping to get away from the supplements if I could. Oh well it does make my stomach feel better. Thanks for letting me know.

I lived with my Grandfather for a while when I was young. He raised 5 healthy kids through the great depression. We ate what ever we had, If the cheese had a little fuss you just cut it off, when the bacon smelled a little rancid you just cooked it little longer, if you couldn't tell what it was in the fridge you made it into soup. I have never been sure if that was considered prebiotic, probiotic or survival of the fittest.

Grandpa lived to be 86 and worked until the day he died. I'm 68 and still kicking so I am not sure how much it matters.

I am pretty sure I have or use all of them. Doing everything that you can to stay healthy is always a good idea. Pretty sure that none specifically help with ms, but overall good health is a good thing

lbenmaor I take probiotics to help keep my digestive system working. I also make smoothies with yogurt, berries and mangos...Then I add "ground" flax" as it increases my fiber intake.

There was an article in MS news that a preliminary study showed probiotics via altering the gut microbiota can help slow symptoms and progression. I took align for yrs and am thinking of adding probiotics back into my regimen. But I think we need more info on which and how much and do they need to be individualized?

I ended up with a pretty severe case of gastritis a few years and spent the night in the hospital. The doctors attributed part of it to too much ibuprofen over the years. I had been using it to counteract side effects from Rebif and avonex. So now I’m not allowed it and I take a probiotic as part of maintaining the gastritis.

My Urologist always recommends 2 probiotics each day with antibiotics, since they kill all bacteria in your body. My GP recommends probiotics to keep the bowel system working properly, so I do take them and they seem to help with my never ending constipation. I keep sauerkraut on hand and try to eat it frequently. It is very good on salads and you don't even taste it with your salad dressing on top. According to a report I saw from this forum recently, sauerkraut is one of the best foods you can eat to help with digestion. The speaker on this report recommended a very small amount each day helps in the digestion of our foods. I have also read reports on MS info that probiotics are very helpful for MS issues. My son got Cdif while in service in Iraq and had to take probiotics for a very long period of time to get his constant diarrhea to stop. It is highly recommended for everyone when that occurs. It is highly prescribed for many digestive issues since it gives a boost to digestion.

I'm glad it helps you. I read that they were still doing studies to see if it helps people with MS.

I am another person who read somewhere on the internet that probiotics help with inflammation (and therefore with the symptoms of MS) and so, bought them on a whim, and started taking them.

That was then... nowadays, I am a firm firm FIRM believer in probiotics! Yes, it sounds silly, and you think, “Something so simple could not be the key, otherwise I would have heard of it.” Well, let’s not go into that... Free solutions, or solutions that cannot be patented, will not attract attention because (very simply) they will not attract funding. ...There is no new money to be made in the discovery of yogurt.

So, back to the point. I take “probiotic pearls” every day, and it’s not to be trendy. It’s because it reduces joint pain, numbness, and electric shocks. I frankly don’t care if it sounds “granola” or “unscientific” or if my doctor smirks... I only care that it so effectively helps with my inflammation.

Some mornings, my finger joints ache like I just punched a hole in the wall. Then I remember: “I forgot my probiotic last night!” Same with waking up with a numb arm. Sure enough, I forgot it last night. That’s proof enough. I don’t need scholarly articles (although there are a few).

Probiotics also cured my GERD, so I could stop taking PPIs. They also help me get away with eating gluten (if I eat it even though I know I shouldn’t). I can eat a donut without payback, IF I also pop a pearl at the same time!

They are not that expensive. Anyone who is experiencing pain should try probiotics consistently for 1 month and ask themself if they feel better at the end of those 30 days. It’s the best thing for inflammation since ice.
