Dental issues and MS

I have several thousands of dollars of dental work to be done due to fractures of many teeth. My dentist pointed out several signs showing that I am exerting extreme pressure on my teeth, and I even broke a silver filling. This appears to be a newer development and has happened since being diagnosed. Does anyone else have experience with this?

It's possible you're grinding your teeth without being aware of it. Did your

dentist suggest a mouth guard? If not, discuss this with him.

Let me know what he says.

Leslie

P.S., It's very common.

This seems to be much more than grinding. I show no typical signs of grinding, but of intense pressure. I have created a prominence of bone on my palate and scalloping of my tongue. I have numerous fractures, or cracks, on my teeth.

I'm sorry you're going through so much pain. Your dentist should probably speak to an oral surgeon.

Between ms and ♋️ I am also paying the price on teeth 🦷. I don’t have any saliva glands which doesn’t help either. I’ve had two crowns and five fillings done ✅ this year and have a upper rear crown that has decay under it 😞. The dentist has to talk to oncologist to figure out what they will do? After having radiation in that area if you disturb the bone and root it can cause a disease 🤨🤬Great! Find out in a couple weeks? Good luck with yours 🙏👍😉 Ken 🐾🐾

I had a dentist damage my front tooth and then deny it and say I never told them about my tooth so the insurance sided with the medicaid dentist . To make matters worst another told dentist told me I had to have the tooth removed but the insurance does't pay to have it replaced. Needles to say I didn't remove the tooth

I have problems with loosing single cusps off my double teeth. I have had 2 pulled as they just collapsed. My dentist said that it was due to the strong amalgam that they filled my teeth with years ago so my teeth are cracking from the pressure of chewing over the years. The pain I get as in my face is not teeth related, I have had deep xrays done and my teeth are fine so they concluded it was due to the ms. Let us know what they say and what you decide to do, Blessings Jimeka 🌈

Are you clenching down hard on your teeth a lot? I tend to do that when I really want to rip into someone for something but doing so wouldn't help the situation. But then I keep them clenched well into the next day and don't notice until my jaws start to hurt.

Ha! I’m not aware of it, but I must be doing so.

I just remembered my brother in law had problems grinding his teeth at night. The dentist made him a mouth piece to wear at night and helped a bunch👍🙏😉. Ken 🐾🐾

Looks like I’ll have to wear a corrective MAGO 24 hours a day for 6/9 months, and then do the restorations as we go along. I’m dreading it because I have a very small mouth, and the MS has made facial and jaw muscles tighter. Just having the routine exam a few days ago left me with facial and jaw pain for a couple of days. Eventually, things will get better. I just never considered the MS and muscles tightening would have an effect on my teeth.

I wear a dental mouth guard at night. I too began breaking teeth in my 40s, about the time I began with multiple pseudo exacerbations, waking with an achy jaw...not from grinding but from clenching. During sleep, I am not aware that I am doing this. It seems to be involuntary.

That's how it appears to me, too.

I have noticed I am not grinding my teeth just clamping them together very tightly. Almost like spasticity of my jaw muscles. Not all the time it just comes and goes.

I think I have the same problem.

I had my first broken tooth. My main problem is cavities. Till my 40s excellent check-ups. Sigh looks like the problem is here to stay and get a mouth guard.

I think this may affect more MS patients than we could have guessed. Though I know we can accumulate more dental problems with aging, I believe MS has had the biggest effect, since this has happened only since being diagnosed with my first relapse 3 years ago. I saw my father-in-law for many years, who just retired from dentistry, and who was very careful and thorough and who would have seen these things if they had been there. He was also very keen on bioesthetics, so he would have fitted me with a mouthpiece if he had noticed problems. It's important to get regular dental checkups anyway, but we should probably tell our dentists that we have MS so that they may look for signs of damage early.

Oh, those teeth! I get my care through the VA but since my problems are not related to combat injuries, the medical care depends on how my problems are 'seen". My teeth have never been exactly excellent as they didn't develop properly while I was a POW in a concentration camp in the Philippine Islands during WWII. Starvation was the "cause". Now, it is becoming very apparent.

Not only has every tooth been filled, capped or otherwise repaired, no tooth is without its own weakness. Sometime in the last several months, an eye tooth above the gum line slipped a side off. The VA wants to remove it as it is dead but will not replace it with an implant before they begin reclast treatment. So, I will be like millions of us without decent dental care, running around like hapless, gappy gertie. I am so disgusted.

Oh, dear! I'm sorry you're having so many issues! When do you start Reclast?

I have been with a mouth guard for many years because I would clench my jaw while I slept. I also had TMJ. And yes, your dentist should be aware of your 'ms'. They are a part of your medical team, along with your eye doctor, your PCP, your neuro, and anyone else that you rely on to keep you as healthy as you can be. 'ms' might be the culprit, but in my case, 'ms' is just making it worse. :-(

I don't think MS is totally to blame, but it surely has made things worse over the past 3 years.

Between dry mouth, acid reflux and the MS my teeth have severely suffered and with no insurance, a closed smile is all that will every be seen. I find I clench a lot during day, but until my jaw hurts.

Yes. A lot of my teeth ice just cracked. I find myself clenching my teeth together and not really being aware of it.

I know this doesn’t sound the same, but I’m going to give you my details anyway and hope you are not headed down this road. My journey started with gum line breakdown after I had developed TMJ. I deal with pressure a lot, and it’s been with me since about the time I had my first MS event, go figure.

I have a type of night guard called a NTI and it works wonders. Some dentists are trained in how to use these devices, but some areas will only have a TMJ specialist offering them. I’m hoping to avoid a joint replacement surgery in the future, because the pressure has disintegrated part of my jaw. I’ve had plenty of dental work issues due to the pressure, and some things we went straight to crowns when I had my ugly amalgam removed, because the decay had been able to sneak under the old fillings. I have no idea what we spent, but I had a procedure every 1-2 months for a year and feel stoked now knowing everything is solid...and pretty too!

I know your story is different, and there’s a lot I’m leaving out about TMJ-headaches and meds, massage, blah blah, but I hope this helps!

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply tokdali

Yes, it does help! Thank you! I don't apparently have TMJ, but a structurally small mouth. The muscle tightening has probably always been there, but if seems as though the MS has really ramped that up.

I'm glad you've been able to get good dental care and hope you never need the joint replacement.

kycmary profile image

Did you have the TMJ before your MS dx? the reason I'm asking is a good friend has TMJ & I heard that it can be a symptom of MS I don't know that for sure but it is interesting as my friend is in her mid 70's & she has not been dx with MS so I'm a little worried for her.

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply tokycmary

I’ve never had TMJ, but a structurally small mouth. After being diagnosed with MS, I think many muscle groups remain in a slightly spastic mode all the time. I wonder if, over the past three years or so, I’ve exerted tons more pressure, but that it has been a gradual building that I didn’t notice.

kdali profile image
kdali in reply tokycmary

I developed TMJ a year before my first episode of optic neuritis, but I wasn’t diagnosed until 15 years later.

TMJ sucks, I hope she’s taking care of it!

Yes, my sister! My Crowns and Root Canals are rolling up to $3,000.00 but I'm upset because I just had adult braces? Didn't have any problems; only wanted a litt;e improvement! Research online stated Copaxone and other medications cause tooth decay. Not fair! We'll ask for prayer and Godspeed

The Best to you

greaterexp , I've had problems with broken or cracked teeth as well as the wearing down of tooth surfaces for years, and dentists always say that it has to be due to grinding (bruxism). I wasn't aware of it, but it must be happening in my sleep. Not too surprising because I should have had my teeth straightened when I was a kid but didn't--though dentists kept saying I had a terrible bite. So maybe now I'm paying for not having the orthodontistry years ago. I've been wearing a nightguard at night for about 30 years now. I hope it has cut down on some of the problems but there have been some broken and cracked teeth during those years. I agree that a consultation with an oral surgeon or other specialist might be a good idea for you.

greaterexp profile image
greaterexp in reply toagate

My new dentist is knowledgeable about bioesthetics and is fitting me with a MAGO to diagnose the bite issues. Then he can start to fix the teeth with fractures. Wearing it 24 hours a day will both diagnose and protect my teeth from some of the pressure, but I’ll probably have to wear some sort of guard at night when everything’s done. I’m not excited about having to wear the thing, but really don’t want my teeth breaking either.

I hope your night guard has helped you prevent more problems.
