According to Widipekia, the US holiday of Mother's Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. St. Andrew's Methodist Church now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine. Her campaign to make Mother's Day a recognized holiday in the United States began in 1905, the year her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, died. Ann Jarvis had been a peace activist who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address public health issues. Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by continuing the work she started and to set aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world".
Although Jarvis was successful in founding Mother's Day, she became resentful of the commercialization of the holiday. By the early 1920s, Hallmark Cards and other companies had started selling Mother's Day cards. Jarvis believed that the companies had misinterpreted and exploited the idea of Mother's Day, and that the emphasis of the holiday was on sentiment, not profit.
In the UK, Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent. Although it's often called Mothers' Day it has no connection with the American festival of that name. And in many other countries mothers are honored on different. Happy Mother’s Day to you!
Truthfully, I would like to have a Mothering Day where I am mothered or I am mothering my elderly mother. My mother, sister and I agreed that we would not visit each other on Mother’s Day, especially when we were all healthier, so that we could spend the day with less expense and festivities. A true relaxing, free day.
Lately, without knowing how my MS will be on this one day, I want to be pampered, especially if I am feeling “yucky”. I want to be mothered.
For all those traditionalist, have a wonderful, blessed Mother’s Day with cards, flowers, candy and a nice dinner to honor all mothers.
I pray that all mothers enjoy their special day with much love, joy and appreciation.
I say a special prayer that anyone who is afflicted by MS or a chronic illness will have the best day that you can. I pray that you will be blessed with a cure or relief from symptoms today or some time in your lifetime.
For those who have loss their mother or women who are barren and childless, may your heart and souls be comforted; that you do not carry this pain with you forever. You are precious and greatly appreciated for the love and talents you to us all.
Blessings to you all.
With sincere love,
Tonyia
