I used to get feelings of flutters, palpitations and thinking my heart's about to jump out of my chest and or missing beats (usually in the evenings when I wasn't doing much). If I checked my jugular pulse it would be high-normal, but regular. It took me a long while to go to a doctor (I was in so much pain and severely depressed that I didn't really care if I had heart issues at that time).

When I did have an ECG it was normal, no signs of a cardiac issue. Blood tests fine.

I now believe that my symptoms were due to muscle fasciculations in my chest/intercostal muscles and restricted tissues applying tensions. Tissues were generating pain/warning signals. My brain was thinking it was my heart, but it was surrounding tissues.

So no, not an irregular heartbeat, but the feeling of one.

Have you had any cardiac tests?

Hi Owen, I frequently have an irregular heart beat and over time I’ve learnt that it happens when I’m sleep deprived & ‘on my knees’ exhausted. It seems to be caused by 2 things, one by the chronic fatigue element of my condition & secondly it’s linked to me body’s excessive pain response. As part of my Fibro & heightened central nervous system sensitisation I have full body rigidity from my toes to my head & scalp and when I accidentally pull against anywhere on me or crush anywhere my heart goes into it’s riff routine. I’m used to it now but it can still stress me out. I’ve no idea if you’ll relate to any of this but I thought I’d let you know. I do know that heart problems can be part of chronic fatigue syndrome but I’ve not come across it with anyone else until I saw your question. My heart speeds up or keeps going faster then slower then faster etc but almost always feels like it’s dropped off a cliff & there’s sudden silence after hammering. Do you experience anything like this?

Yes, but being told is nothing to worry about. And yet, sometimes it feels as if my heart is jumping out of my chest. Have felt much better recently, no idea why. But that is what happens with fibromyalgia... I am on s good run at the moment!
