yes i am told that when red blood cells breakdown the waste collects in the kidneys: extra red blood cells = extra waste = kidney stones

I have PV diagnosed a year ago. For about three years I have had recurrent UTIs (approximately every three months). This is not just cystitis but unbearable pain about an hour from onset. Because of the time it takes to get treatment, I am always at this stage before I can get help. I have wondered if there is a connection, but what is the answer?

Hi

In reply to jazzyb - I was diagnosed with PV 3 years ago and take hydroxicarbamide and aspirin. I have a couple of small kidney stones too - gather it's par for the course and nothing to worry about!

In reply to crazy daisy - if I were you I would either create stink at your GPs surgery ( tears are always a good catalyst) and insist on an urgent referral to a consultant urologist - or if you can afford it, find a good private consultant, you should be seen within a week. I did just that in April after 6 months treatment for a urine infection which was quite horrendous. It turned out I had an enormous abscess in my bladder. Whatever you do, do not just sit back and swallow antibiotics. I was prescribed Nitrofurantoin for 6 months and now have severe nerve damage called peripheral neuropathy - despite complaining of side effects listed in the packet. Rare, but it happens. Look at the side effects very carefully, and don't be fobbed off.

You are entitled to see a consultant and you MUST see one. Don't wait. It could spread to your kidneys, also rare but it's so much better to check. I found out the hard way.

My problem was nothing to do with PV, and I bet yours isn't either. Do you eat a lot of sweet sugary things?
