PCP ran blood panels for upcoming visit. I resumed HU 500mg three times a week about two and half months ago. Disturbing results came in tonight on patient portal regarding AST. It was 58 normal is 44. I have not had alcohol in about 8 months. Could my liver enzymes be elevated because of HU. If so are the numbers alarming enough to contact my MPN specialist? Opinions are very much appreciated.
TIA my very best to all,
Janet

hi Janet, I would suggest that you contact your MPN specialist, just for clarification on the number and what it means, I am sure that if there was anything to worry about your specialist would have contacted you. Best wishes, Maz
Mazcd is on spot, as usual. Definitely put in a call to your MPN care team.
You are correct that HU can affect the liver; however, people experience fluctuations in LFTs for a number of reasons. My hematologist told me that random mild elvations are actually quite common. It is worth noting that AST alone is not the only LFT to consider. There are other numbers to evaluate, including ALT, Alk Phos, etc.
Please do let us know what you learn and how you get on.
Thank you for your valuable advice as always Hunter. I called both my local PCP and Hem/Onc. yesterday. They have not returned my calls even though I had the PCP email my latest results to local hem. Neither responded , I have an appointment with PCP tomorrow. My bloods have always been on point until the HU was added. Now I have several things lower than normal. I am grateful for this group because obviously my doctors aren’t proactive or caring.
I watched my husband a year and half ago die a slow death under the care of an onc/hematologist . They never came up with dx until too late. This taught me to be your own advocate and learn as much as possible about diseases instead of putting all your trust in doctors. Moffitt appt is in Feb maybe some answers on meds then.
Thank you and wishing you a wonderful Holiday Season,
