What's the deal with Spinach?

Does eating too much Spinach while having PV affect your CBC?

I have never heard of spinach having an effect on the CBC. It does contain more iron than some vegetables,but in a form that is hard for the body to absorb. I think you would have to eat a LOT of spinach to have much impact on RBCs.

Popeye was a tough guy. He could eat canned spinach. Yuck!

possibly, when I was juicing broccoli and cabbage it increased my counts a lot when on venisection only, this surprised me and my docs, eating is a bit different to juicing of course

is it perhaps the high level of Vit K in leafy greens? I know people on blood thinners like warfarin are told to limit eating them

I was told to dose the diet, not diet the dose whilst I was on warfarin.that way I could get all the benefits of eating healthy foods without the extra vitamin k potential disbenefits

My haematologist told me to stop drinking green tea after I bled alot after a blood test. I was told it did "odd things to the platlets". I asked them about broccoli and spinach and they said they should be ok, its only people on blood thinner (not aspirin) that cannot eat leafy veg due to the vit K content. I have PV and I am on aspirin and hydroxy. It was a relief because I eat both very regularly but I think it is a bit of a mine field, and I was a bit disappointed about the green tea!

1 cup a day. Also just read that pumpkin seeds thin the blood too and i eat loads of them. I think I should stop reading things!

I too eat pumpkin seeds daily and loads of them! I also drink green tea but not much. I hadn’t heard about this, thank you for mentioning it.

I was recommend to drink 2 cups of good organic green tea a day. I get Gunpowder green ..

Not my favourite tea so usually have one a functional practitioner and my Ayurvedic practitioner say generally beneficial .

That’s why I find it reassuring to consult good ‘unconventional ‘ people as well as conventional. Otherwise my head would spin .

I guess it could, not sure how much you would actually absorb, Iron is not easily absorbed. I’m not sure but being a PV patient on Peginterferon have had issues with keeping my target hematocrit at 45 or lower, have needed monthly phlebotomy to get my levels down. My Dr recommends no iron supplements as it would blow up my hematocrit (again not sure if spinach would tip the scales) When my hematocrit gets too low, below 40, I do seem to tire quicker. But then I treat myself to a big t-bone steak. Have lived with ET for 14 yrs and now starting yr 2 with my new diagnosis of PV it seems balancing my blood numbers these days has become harder to do. Blood tests every 2 weeks. You probably know you get good days and not so good days. Blood chemistry is a tricky thing and a well regarded cancer program and a smart physician helps an awful lot.

I have ET. spinach, broccoli, dark greek leafy vegetables, sweet potato, and other foods raise my thrombocytes. I haven’t notice s change in my RBC. I have beta thalassemia since birth. Could use more RBC.
