Hydroxy and hot flushes

Been on hydroxurea for a couple months. Thought I was done with hot flashes (or ‘power surges’ as my hemiotologist calls them) but have been experiencing somewhat nasty ones daily now … any others with advice? Tia.

Same thing happens to me, but I take four hydroxurea a day not sure how many you take. When I took only two it didn’t do that to me. It’s a terrible feeling I know

I alternate - 500 and 1000 mg each other day . Yes, it can be very uncomfortable .

I take same dosage as you and get about one big “sweat session” per night; also random heat surges some days. Sweater on; sweater off. I have a ceiling fan in the bedroom which does help with the night sweats.

Possibly a side effect of the HU as you likely already know.

Not very pleasant. Hope you find it does not continue. Definitely report it to your hematologist. If it does not subside then perhaps there is another med that will suit you better.

Yes I am usually hot unless about 3 degrees!! The meds do seem to make us rather intolerant to heat, I find gentle walking, good hydration and trying to cut stress down all very helpful.

Hi. I have always suffered with continual hot flushes since i was 48 and am now 73. However i too have been on hydroxy a couple of months now and they have intensified . I have had some days where i am so hot and soaked its awful and it is certainly something i intend discussing as soon as am able as it is an awful feeling. On the upside bloods yesterday showed drop in platelets from 514 to 445 in just over 2 weeks.

I'm taking one Hydroxycarbamide a day and I've had this problem for months now. I get boiling up sensations in my feet and back. It even started on my thighs yesterday. Initially I thought it was just with the warmer weather. I'm planning to report it to my clinic nurse as it affects my sleep and I feel tired enough with fatigue at the moment so it's not helpful

I'm only on aspirin and I have never been so warm in my life. I am still wearing cool, sleeveless tops. I keep a thin cardigan handy but it never stays on for long and sleeping is difficult when I'm so hot, not to mention various aches and pains.

Yeah same. On hydroxy 500 / 1000 mg alternate per day. Wasn't sure if it was menopause or the PV. Seem to get spates of them for a while and then they go away for a bit. But I struggle with heat all the time. If it is warm it feels like my body really can't cope. And my feet are always hot to the touch.

Have you tried HRT? I was on HRT for years, stopped couple of years ago and I was doing fine until I went on hydroxy. It was like a switch being turned on to boil my blood! That with other side effects, haematologist stooped hydroxy for a few weeks and I asked to be prescribed HRT again. Hot flushes stopped. After looking at all other options of treatment, we decided to give hydroxy another go. Been back on it now 3 weeks and so far so good.! Good luck

I was told I had to come off HRT when I was diagnosed with ET because of my increased stroke risk.
