Weight gain and side effects from HU

Has anyone had weight gain from HU? I am on a very strict diet and exercise routine but have gained 10 lbs I can not loose when I started HU. I also have one of the side effects of sores in the mouth and don’t know if that goes away or if there is something treat it with.

Mouth ulcers are one of the common side effects from HU. They do not go away, but continue or get worse based on my own experience. Despite dropping to 1 tab every other day my oral symptoms got worse, ultimately resulting in leukoplakia. I had to discontinue the HU as i simply could not tolerate the toxicity of this med.

There is an oral gel I used called AO Provantage that did help manage the ulcers. It is something my dentist recommended. It does help.

While some people tolerate HU without significant problems, not all of us can. The good news is that there are other options. I have tolerated Pegasys far better. In fact I have had no adverse effects at all from PEG.

We are all different in how we respond to the meds used to treat MPNs. I hope you fond the treatment that works for you ASAP.

You didn't say how long you had been on HU. I had sores at first but found that using Anbesol helped solve the problem for me. (I think my body adjusted to the medication too.) I still have a tendency to a sore mouth but it's manageable. I too have put on weight but have always it on easily.

I have definitely put on some weight since starting HU (about 4-5 kg)...also have had some skin ulcers (not mouth) -

I have a lot of trouble with mouth ulcers, but had none for about a month. Coinciding with a massive apple crop, eating 5 a day, could they be helping?

Hmm! That explains not being able to lose weight. I was just speaking with my husband last night that I have restricted my intake of calories so much and exercise and cannot seem to lose any weight Discouraging:/

I also have a weight gain and can't lose it my mouth sores went when I swilled with boiled salt water,my stomach bloating is mostly ok now I drink a couple of peppermint teas a day it was nt so much a weight gain as stomach bloating for me

I got sores in my mouth from HU. I was sent to an Oral Surgeon, who had nothing to offer except his bill. I treated it with Organic Apple Cider Vinegar on a Q-tip applied directly to the sore. It cured it, and it hasn't come back.

Yes I have gained weight even though I fast for 16 hours and restrict what I eat the rest of the time. I was doing really well before I started taking HU . Hope things improve for you.
