INR spikes with warfarin

My INR has been stable for many months, with the dosage unchanged during that period. However, a couple of weeks ago it shot up to 3.9, then went back down to 2.6 (after missing one days dose). Unfortunately it went back up to 3.5 today. I'm reducing the dose for a couple of days then getting re-checked on Friday.

I can't imagine as to what may be the cause and just wondered if anyone else has had similar spikes in their INR without being able to work out why?

Mark

Hi Marc, my INR wouldn’t stay stable on Warfarin & I developed clots within 2 days being out of range. So my docs switched me to a ELIQUIS. Good luck. Katie

Inr is very diet dependent. Had yr type of diet varied? Including any alcohol? Or more busy? Stressed? All could be a factor.

My INR is rarely stable despite doing very little different week to week. I rarely drink alcohol but if I do it causes it to increase substantially. My range is 3.5-4 due to previous clots at lower ranges.

For 10 years I needed Warfarin blood tests every 2-3 weeks, very occasionally it was a 4 week

gap. When the results were particularly out of range I enquired if it could be caused by stress. Possibly. During those times I had been more exhausted caring (single handed) for terminally ill relatives. However, for the past four years I have been on one of the new Anticoagulants. What a relief - only occasional blood tests for liver checks, no INR worries, no dietary restrictions and no Yellow Book !!Great relief.

You need to watch your vitamin K intake, hence leafy vegetables intake and any supplements you may be taking.
