Hello. Anybody else here have a high eosinophil count? And if so what did you doctor say?
Eosinophilia: Hello. Anybody else here have a high... - MPN Voice
Eosinophilia
On the blood test I had in March mine says eosinophil count 0.61 normal range 0.02-0.50 nothing has been said about it and I don't even know what it means.
Carol
I know that high eosinophils can indicate allergies, parasitic infections, and things like that. Eosinophilia is also involved with MPNs. Mine have been elevated for the past 6 months (new for me) and I wasn't sure if it was indicative of a worsening of a MPN as well since I have been feeling so ill recently. I have a hematologist appt in a few weeks so I will ask about it then.
What has your reading been? I just Googled it and see that it's a type of white count. My whites have been high since my pv diagnosis in 2017. Fluctuating between 17 at their lowest and 30 at the highest. Guessing the eosinophil count goes up and down correspondingly
Carol
Yeah, eosinophils are a type of white blood cell. My count is just barely out of range. My last 2 counts were 0.34 and 0.37 with normal being up to 0.3. It just got my antenna up because I've always had normal eosinophils for 16 years. And one abnormal result might be a fluke thing but two abnormal results are more concerning. My new symptoms that are concerning me are nausea and a loss of appetite. You never did get an answer about whether you have MF or not did you?
No I've never been told I've progressed to mf, but various printed results I've had suggest it. Also the fact that I was changed over to Ruxolitinib rather abruptly without an explanation made me suspect. One printed report from a consultant actually said I was to continue with the ruxolitinib for my mf. I don't know if it was a mistake or if it meant they are treating me as mf and just haven't told me. You know how these people like to be in control and don't tell you anything unless they have to. I feel like I'm past caring now anyway. If it is mf I would still be on the same treatment. The rux has reduced my spleen so I don't get pain from that anymore. It's stopped the itching. I no longer have a cough and my white count has come down to 17. The blood cancer itself doesn't bother me too much but the spinal fractures I've had mean I am in constant pain. I firmly believed they were caused by the pv and it actually says that on my last MRI report.
Carol
Yes, some doctors like to give you the least amount of information as possible. I agree with your assessment that you probably have it but they just haven't told you.
I'm glad you have responded to the ruxolitinib nicely. Spinal fractures sound very painful. I hope you are taking something to help with the pain.
I have 10mg pain patches that you change once a week but I'm not impressed with them. Still in constant pain and have to sit down with my knees up every few minutes. I'm having a knees up right now 😆
Carol
As you already know, high eosinophil count is potentially related to immune response. If you have been experiencing some form of illness, it would likely be just your body's natural response to infection. However, some of us with PV will also tend to run a bit high on leukocytes as a function of the PV. For me, basophils run borderline high all the time. The doc is not concerned and it is just one of the things we keep an eye on, but don't worry about. I expect borderline high eosinophils will be the same.
The the thing to stay aware of is that more significant leukocytosis would be a concern. Leukocytosis is correlated with an increased risk of thrombosis for people with PV. More so, in some research, than thrombocytosis alone. Watching for more significant leukocytosis as a risk factor would make sense, but would expect there is not much to worry about at this point.
Hope that helps. Do please let us know what the doc says.
Thanks. I always run on the high side with my leukocytes...usually around 10k and sometimes up to 12k. I am always looking out for an uptick in WBC because I know it could indicate MF. Whatever it is I wish it would go away lol. I will see what the doctor says and update here.
That's probably the answer to your question. They're leucocytes, and since the total number of leucocytes is on the higher side of normal, some types of them (eosinophils or basophils or other) can be bit outside of normal range, because they're not evenly produced by the bone marrow and it depends on your immune system and other factors.
My doc's lab shows 10.01 as top of the normal range for WBC. Sounds like you ride the edge of that. Do let us know what the doc says. Meanwhile - stay cool. We are sure having a few swampy days!
My Dr left practice but before he dis put note in file "mds vs MDS?" But then again his notes for my labs said continue RX as prescribed - at that time I had not been on anything for 18 mos. Next appt was with the head of hematology I let him know I did not appreciate reading notes like this about things they fail to discuss.
