Probable phlebitis

Hi everyone,I went to Minor Injuries today because last night I suddenly had a pain and redness on the outside of my ankle. The practitioner I saw said it looked like phlebitis, which is no problem for "normal" people but he wasn't sure about people with MPNs. He was great and I can go back any time, but I just wondered if anyone here has had it and whether it became problematic. I'm undecided about whether to bother the haematology nurse at the main hospital. I do tend to anxiety...

Phlebitis involves a clot in a vein. If you have an MPN any clots are a cause for concern. Contact your haematology nurse for advice. Don't wait because it is Christmas.

Thank you. I phoned the haematology nurse this morning and went in for a blood test and examination. It turns out to be cellulitis. It's painful and I'm on antibiotics for Christmas but I am so relieved it's not a blood clot.

Hi Otterfield, you must contact your haematologist or haematology nurse about this straight away. Best wishes, Maz

Hi, one thing I think that you should ask about is whether you have the start of a cellulitus infection. I have PV (diagnosed in 2006) and I have had repeated episodes of cellulitus in my ankles and it always started as you described.

If this is your problem you will need to be prescribed some antibiotics and this should be done ASAP. So get it looked at straight away even if it means going to your local Urgent Care Centre and if all else fails go to your nearest A&E.

If these infections are ignored they go up your leg and can become serious. So a stitch in time saves nine! As it is Christmas Eve, don't delay.

Very best wishes, Lyn

You were right! After a trip to the hospital this morning, cellulitis was diagnosed and I now have antibiotics for a week. Thank you for your very quick reply.
