All I can tell you is my experience. I got diagnosed with ET 11 years ago. I have had balance issues for years. I really didn’t connect the two. But it’s definitely a factor. Also, dizziness and fatigue. Make sure you inform your doctor.

I have PV and it definitely effects my balance. I can’t shut my eyes if I’m standing up - I’ve had lots of wobbles while washing my hair in the shower! It’s worse if I’m tired or a bit dehydrated. So usual advice - lots of water and rest helps.

I have found my balance improved greatly after taking up Pilates and Circuit Training again. I was awful in the beginning but slowly my balance improved. Still get the odd wobble but nothing like before.

Pilates helps me so much to try to manage my symptoms. I love it!

I have had ET for 13 years and definitely suffered from balance problems. I had all sorts of tests on my ears and they told me I had lost the balance mechanism in my right ear. Not sure how this works but had been having inner ear problems almost from the time my ET was diagnosed. Not infections, just the inability to walk in a straight line!

I have always had a wonderful sense of balance as I did ballet when I was young and have done yoga for years. Admittedly I am quite old now but I am absolutely sure that the lack of balance came with the ET. My platelets we 1200 when I was diagnosed.

Sadly, it has never got much better but I do still enjoy my yoga and am careful when walking on uneven ground, as I don't seem to be able to feel the contours.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes

Kate
