ET - menstruation cyle

Morning all

Wondered whether anyone knows whether fncreased clotting during the menstruation cycle could be a sign your platelet counts have increased further?

This is increased comparative to ones normal cycle and where ET is diagnosed.

ET may well have an effect on your menstrual cycle - heavier bleeding, clotting etc. And if this is the case - aside from the inconvenience and any other side effects - it may well make you more iron deficient (with all that comes with that). Not sure whether there is a direct correlation between increased clotting and an increased platelet count (though it sounds plausible that the more pesky your platelet count the more likely blood issues) but definitely worth discussing with your haem.

My haemo thinks I’ve had ET since I was 18, diagnosed just last year at 37, but have had raised platelets for over 12 years, my periods are much heavier since starting on aspirin alone, My platelet count seems to remain steady though.

You may want to talk to your haem about reducing the aspirin to every other day. Or maybe reducing / stopping during menstruation. If the bleeding is bothering you then you can get some standard prescription meds to reduce the bleeding - they increase the clotting so the effect is less bleeding all over the place. But you’ll need to stop the aspirin while you’re taking the meds (which will only be for a few days each month). As ever, talk to your haem first.

It’s on my list for next week when I see my Haemo. I am on a daily double dose too, my Haemo is trying to improve my circulation which is dire and the increased dose isn’t helping that either so back to the drawing board! Its never straight forward :-) thank you for your advice xx

Hi, i have ET and had the coil fitted, due to heavy periods. I was taking Asprin and HU. It worked for me. Checkout all your options with your heamotolgist

Definitely! Since my ET started, (at 46) the periods were getting increasingly shorter and the blood was darker. I though it was menopause. Since the treatment, 1.5 years ago, my period is as it was at 40. At some point, the aspirin was not enough and I had period problems again and then a small TIA. Once on proper med, all was well. It’s important to have a proper flow. The body needs to clean itself. I’m now 54 and have a normal healthy period. Doctor said I can still get pregnant! No thanks. Was there. Already did that.
