Hi Ohalloran,

I haven't tried to take out life insurance since diagnosis, but as a number of members on this site have successfully claimed on their critical illness policies I'm not surprised. Logically, we cannot have it both ways and expect insurance companies to cover us for life for an illness that they are also paying out for on a critical illness basis.

However, someone else may be able to advise.

Best regards

Hiya Don, I was diagnosed with PRV in 2004 & I've not bothered with life insurance as such; I do have accidental cover only assuming that I wouldn't get straightforward life cover. Might be a silly question but, would your insurers look at life cover with the exception of death through PRV? Not sure why they have refused cover when PRV, when properly managed, is not necessarily a death sentence!!! My haematologist, when asked in 2005 said, "we've only lost 2 & I don't intend increasing that figure!" Have you looked at the likes of the Money Saving Expert website? He seems to have his head screwed on... Keep positive & strong, but most of all keep well.

Hi Don,

I will have had PV for 5 years this year, and I just want to say primarily - don't worry - there are a lot of us out here with PV and other MPD's, some folk for as long as 30 years! Not sure about life cover, I haven't honestly looked into it, but I don't seem to have a problem with travel insurance.

I'll ask my insurance company and come back to you.

Meanwhile, best wishes, this is a good site on which to stay in touch, and if you haven't seen the UK MPN support website, do have a look at mpdvoice.co.uk which is excellent. They also hold nationwide forums where patients, family, friends and specialists can meet up, discuss things and learn about the new research and trials which are coming along in leaps and bounds.

Best wishes

Louise

Hi Don. I have ET and was refused cover by a couple of insurers about 7 years ago. Shopped around and got reasonable cover from another with just a slight increase in premium.

Hi Don, I have made a critical illness claim through Scottish Provident and have since gone on to get life cover only from Aviva and this includes PV. Hope this helps.
