Michael Hughes is a founder of the Childless Not by Choice podcast and community, The Full Stop. The Full Stop support people who are childless not by choice for any reason. He also started the Childless Men’s Community on Facebook with Andy Harrod.
Michael is going to talk about his experience of being male and childless and how being childless not by choice can impact men. Everyone is welcome to join this webinar whether you are a CNBC man or someone who is supporting them.
Michael is one half of a childless couple that like to say “made it through” but they didn’t do it alone. Many years on the psychologist’s couch delving into the combined results of dysfunctional families, PTSD from childhood sexual abuse and depression from their childlessness helped them greatly.
Michael says ‘Vickie and I met when we were about 16 when we both had casual jobs at the local McDonalds. I was new to Australia, as my family had emigrated from the UK a couple of years before we met, Vickie on the other hand is a true ‘Skippy’. We married in our mid 20’s and started for a family closer to our 30’s and by 40 we had to draw a line in the sand to say, we’d never be parents’.
Michael and his partner Vickie have discovered a love of travel, that has taken them to many parts of the world recognising ‘this too helps us manage being CNBC’. They found a Facebook group ‘Childless Path to Acceptance’ run by Steph Phillips founder of World Childless Week, that was full of women and some men in their position. The warmth, support and love that flowed from this group opened their eyes to a wider world.
Michael started writing of a blog on the eve of Mother’s Day 2016 at 1am in the morning in a motel off the i10 just outside of Quincy in Florida. This blog led him to where he is now: talking openly about being male and childless and raising awareness about the impact of being male and childless not by choice.
