I have been told that migraines can be triggered by loud background music. Is this true?

DodieGale-

Yes this all of the research I have done has said that loud sound worsen a migraine. The cause of a migraine is still being researched. One theory now is that all of the other issues you have are causing the attack. If you have back and neck pain this can cause a migraine. They no longer believe it is just the blood vessels constricting that causes a migraine. So it is important to fix anything you have wrong besides the migraine.

Good luck,

I don't think loud music itself causes a migraine unless the music stresses you, stress can be a powerful migraine trigger. If you like the music it is unlikely to cause a migraine. Within reasonable limits of course.

Thank you for your reply. So it's really only likely to trigger a migraine if you find it stressful? That makes sense

I don't think sound unless it is used as an instrument of torture ie extremely loud for extremely long is likely to cause a migraine. People often assume you cannot tolerate any noise when you have a migraine but for me at least this is not true. I find I can tolerate my own music, music that is predictable bc I know it and music that is within my own power to turn off when i have a migraine. But i have chronic migraines so i have them over 50% of the time so I find you have to find a way to keep existing in a normal manner to an extent. You will almost certainly be more sensitive to noise when you are in the prodrome phase of a migraine and during the migraine itself. Your migraine usually starts ( the prodrome stage) up to 2 days before the pain comes, so may have a negative association with noise and migraine but this may be bc your migraine has already started but you are unaware of it. This has been found to be true with other triggers like chocolate which for a long time has been wrongly described as a migraine trigger.
