Hi! I've been getting the ON shots for about 3 years now. I'm concerned about long term use of the steroid. I've tried looking it up but I can't find a direct answer. Just found this site today, I'm excited to find people that KNOW what I go thru.

Any other Occipital Neuralgia on here? ON blocks?
Hi,
I've been getting GON block injections over the last 2 years.
I was told (by the migraine clinic nurse, who administers the injections) only the first 2 injections contain steroid & anaesthetic, then all subsequent GON blocks are a mix of 2 local anaesthetics. I presume that would be the norm, but best to check with your clinic directly.
Hope this helps. Take care.

I have been suffering with migraines 25 or so years. I started having the "back of the head" headaches about 10 years ago which were so much worse than classic migraines, I kept asking all the "doctors" I saw what the heck was going on and not until two years ago did a new pain specialist tell me it was occipital neuralgia. When one woke me up, I'd take something and wanted to do nothing but lie down but the pain was unbearable when I tried to lay down. I've only had a couple of blocks about five or six years ago, and sometimes they worked and sometimes they didn't. I just started with my 4th pain specialist and they have treated me twice with spheno something something (a lidocaine cocktail up the nose) which didn't help. I've asked for nerve blocks but have not been given any yet by this pain specialist. I have a vicious cycle going on -- I can't fall asleep at night several nights a week which causes migraines. Can't take Ambien -- causes me migraines. I've bought hundreds of dollars of over the counter sleep aids, all to no avail. My doctor goes deaf when I tell her I can't sleep at night and need something desperately.
Anyway, good luck to you. I feel your pain!!!
