Anyone had Meningitis with septicaemia and been left profoundly deaf, has tinnitus, permanently off balance and cannot walk without crutches
Hi. If you message Vasco or look at his profile you will read that as a result of Meningitis and Septicaemia he amongst many other problems became profoundly deaf and now has cochlea inplants. I also now have reduced hearing in my left ear and tinnitus and have appointments at a Neuro Otology (balance) Clinic. I am now nearly 3 yrs on from Bacterial Meningitis and septicaemia and along with having sustained frontal brain injury with gives me problems managing day to day life I also have ongoing balance problems. My balance has improved over the years with doing the vestibular exercises daily but I still become very unbalance in darkness and with fatigue. When I first came home from hospital I had a walking frame, then progressed to 2 walking sticks and now 1 walking stick during periods when my balance deteriorates.
Hi, I know just how you feel. I too do vestibular exercises but they dont seem to do much. I attend speech and language meetings at Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield to try and help me understand speech. I can hear noises but they dont sound like they used to e.g. running water and car engines nothing sounds the same as it did. I cannot go out alone probably like you as I cannot hear whats going on around me and therefore crossing road is a no no.Im glad you only need 1 stick now. I still use 2 and a wheelchair but I was 65 when I got men and sep and will be 68 in September so I think age may be something to do with it. Im so glad you contacted me. Please keep in touch.
The BM & S is certainly a nasty illness that turns lives upside down with devastating after effects. I suffered it in 2011 when I was 52 yrs. I cannot imagine what it must be like to go from a hearing world to profoundly deaf and it certainly must make communicating with your family and the world a major difficulty. As I mentioned in my message before that Vasco who regularly uses this site would be better able to understand your difficulties because he has suffered a similar situation with the sudden lose of his hearing along with other major problems. Hi i had meningicocal septicaemia when i was a baby and now have problems walking, my right leg is 3" shorter than my left leg so am now registered disabled and currently awaiting a hip replacement
Thank you for your reply. Hope you op goes ok. My legs are the same length but only the left one works properly. Maybe I should get registered disabled too then we could be a matching pair.
