Hello : Newly diagnosed (09/2024)with... - Meningioma Support
Hello
Hi Sydnshel, apologies that you have not received a reply. We have some information that you may find helpful in making a decision about where to be treated.
As a charity, we are unable to recommend a specific consultant or hospital over another. However, there is a programme called the Tessa Jowell Centres of Excellence, whereby hospital's around the UK are given the status of excellence and their patients will be assured that they will receive the best possible care. The Tessa Jowell Centres of excellence programme has been developed to enable and encourage as many neuroscience centres as possible to achieve centre of excellence designation.
Not being treated in a Centre of Excellence doesn’t mean you will not receive good care. This the start of this new programme and not all centres applied to become a centre of excellence and those that weren’t successful this time often missed out by a small margin - the Tessa Jowell Brain Cancer Mission (TJBCM) and The Charity will be working with them to help them improve. The assessment is done by a panel of experts – leading clinicians in each specialism review the centre on many facets of their work supporting people and progressing treatment and research. The Brain Tumour Charity is part of that panel championing the experience of people and their families as reported to us in the Improving Brain Tumour Care surveys.
It may help to read a bit more about the Centres of Excellence, as well as the different factors you may wish to consider when choosing where to be treated, on our page here: thebraintumourcharity.org/b...
Finally, we have a page which includes questions to ask: thebraintumourcharity.org/b... Here we’ll suggest some questions to ask your doctor about a brain tumour. These may help you better understand your diagnosis, treatment plan, and care.
I hope this is helpful. If you would like additional support, or just want to talk things through, you can give us a call on 0808 800 0004, Monday – Friday 9-5. Alternatively, you can email us on: support@thebraintumourcharity.org.
Warm wishes, The Support Team.
