Benefits Support

My daughter has moved into supported housing where she is living independently with staff onsite if necessary.Within days of reporting her change of address to PIP she has had a text from them with a telephone appointment from the health assessment dept. Her re-assessment was overdue because they had such a backlog, and I am assuming this is what the phone call is about.

There doesn't seem to be anyone where she lives that deals with paperwork, benefits etc., but paperwork, correspondence and suport with officialdom is written in her care plan.

I don't know how to help her. Can I insist that her care plan is followed? They seem OK with everything else but it seems are happy to fob her off.

I’m sure they could rustle up someone to help her but if they don’t really know the system or her health situation very well then that might be risky as they won’t know how to advocate for her. I assume you or someone else assisted with her initial claim? It might be more pragmatic and less stressful if you or they were to be there for the call and ensure the right answers are given.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I always helped her previously but the reason my daughter moved out of home is because we want to move to a different area and my daughter didnt, so we won't always be around for her. This worries me greatly as she struggles with even the simplest paperwork. So far we have done everything for her such as setting up utilities, changes of address etc. I do wonder though what happens when we move or pass away.

Maybe get in touch with your local Mencap or care for the carers. They should be able to talk to you about your circumstances and advise you the best route forward.
