Our 27 year old with profound learning disablilty, autism and non verbal was awarded 50 hrs care a week until a place becomes available at the local Day Service. I currently have a teaching post which is a job share. The remaining days I was signed to do relief teaching at other schools. As I’m only informed at 8am it becomes near impossible to find a carer at such short notice. I asked the council if I could be her carer on those two days and they’ve agreed!! I also will do more with her to prepare her for the day service than the other carers.

There is a bit of admin involved: I had to motivate my request and my get insurance etc. My husband will set up a payroll and employ me!!! It’s not a huge sum of money but will reduce my stress considerably. Usually the council don’t pay people as carers from the same household.

I hope it all works out for you , its not easy being a carer and having to rely on people . . I am glad your council has seen sence ?? Best wishes to your daughter.

this is great news for you. It’s such hard work juggling work, caring and advocating. Sounds like this will give you greater balance. Well done for fighting your corner so well. Hope a place becomes available soon at day care 👍
