Hello, we are quite a new charity daycare service based in West Yorkshire. We have a new leartner who wants to join our group regularly, but he is currently on Buccal medication, for epilepsy. Does anyone know the best way we can get training in how to help with this, so we can help him if required. Isthis available online

Hi. I used to manage a charity that worked with children and young people with disabilties, some of whom required buccal midazolam. You can access epilepsy awareness training online but administration of buccal midazolam needs to be done face to face and, if I recall correctly, tailored to the needs of the individual (ie there is an observation element to the training, ensuring that a named member of staff is competent to administer buccal midazolam to the specific individual). We were in the Midlands so our contact is sadly not likely to be of use to you but you could contact your local community nursing team to see who they use. Sometimes it is possible to access shared training with another organisation. Or you could contact Epilepsy Action to see if they can signpost you to trainers in your area epilepsy.org.uk/professiona.... Good luck

Hi,

thanks for feedback, I am going to contact the epilepsy direct, to see what the best options are locally.

Much appreciated

speak to the epilepsy society they would be the best people to advise you unless you have an epilepsy centre near you.

We use Buccal for my son, as parents we had no training just had to go by the leaflet. The daycentre and respite facilities have all staff trained it has to be most staff, it’s definitely not one assigned staff member for him, they have to have most staff trained to cover sickness etc. There are service providers of Buccal training, Google and see what’s in your area.
