my daughter is 18 and autistic, completed college course level 1 and has been told she would not be able to pass level 2 as the work would be too hard. has been offered a years internship (pilot scheme for young aduts with autism)in associaion with college and local nhs trust. this is unpaid. is my daughter entitled to any form of benefit?

I have never claimed for her previously as unsure what she is entitled too.

Thank you

Hi it sounds like she should be able to get employment support allowance or universal credit and personal independence payment due to her learning disabilities. I would suggest you contact the citizens advice bureau as they will be able to advise you what she can claim and help you fill in the forms.

So you think she may be entitled to 2 different benefits. I find it really hard applying as I have never claimed a benefit in my 50 years . They make it so complicated. That I always give up . But this time I have to push as it’s for my daughter

Yes my son is at college. He gets Pip which is Personal independence payment (this is split into two components Care and Mobility) because he has a disability and universal credit because he’s unable to work (even after college). He also gets universal credit. However your daughter cannot get UC if you still get Child Benefit for her. If you aren’t getting benefits yourself it will work out better for her to claim UC and for you to cancel the child benefit.

It’s definitely worth speaking to either the come cap helpline or citizens advice.

Hi my son has learning disability and autism he is 21 now goes to college . He started receiving UC when he turned 20 before that we received child tax credits for him. He is also receiving PIP, He has a EHCP too, and when applying for UC and PIP I sent the documents of autism diagnosis ,learning disability diagnosis and EHCP as evidence to them. It was no problem claiming but very time consuming and long form PIP to fill. Once on UC you should get a form after three months for assessment of work capability , I sent the same documents ,they didn’t assessed as being no work capability group. I hope this helps.
