SALT report and referal to Peadiatrician

I have 3 boys 1 of which has a dual diagnosis of asd and adhd. My little one has been referred to a community Peadiatrician with suspected asd. My question is really based on speech and language. He had an assessment of language skills recently (CELF) and scored... concepts & following directions - 7.... Formulated sentences - 8.... Expressive vocabulary - 5. He struggles with recall especially, he seems very immature compared to his peers and his behaviour has deteriorated hugely and spilling over into school. He is behind in all subjects. He is very loving and sociable tho compared to my other son who struggles socially? I want to get him the correct help and wondered if this could indicate asd or gdd? Thanks x

Hi there,

Referral to a paediatrician is just the first step and I think they will not be looking for one particular diagnosis. Hopefully they will listen to what you've got to say because you know your son best.

My son now 21 had ADHD/ASD/mild learning difficulties and also exhibits tourettes at particularly stressful times and suffers with anxiety. They don't read the manuals and diagnostic criteria!!!

I have found over the years that making a few notes if you get chance before you see the Dr helps with informing them. You could also use examples of similarities and differences between your 6 yr old and your already diagnosed son.

In the end I think the diagnosis gives you access to services to help your son. Your son is your little boy and not the diagnosis.

The fact you end your post with "I want to get him the correct help" shows you care and have his best interests at heart. This is all you can do. Make the best decision with the best intentions at the time.

Good luck.

Thankyou. Yes I absolutely adore my boys and a diagnosis doesnt change who and what they are to me. It does change the help they can access as I've learnt through my oldest even though it's still got to be fought for. At one point for years I was the only one that suspected anything with my oldest and just told its 'my parenting' which made me question myself. X
