How Can My Friend Get Support For Her learning Difficulty?

Hello, I am worried about someone I know, she has learning's difficulties (that is how she identifies her self) and is unable to read or write most words. She finds it difficult to express her self and also has difficulty remembering instructions. As far as I am aware she has never had a formal assessment. At the moment she is working at a centre for people with learning disabilities as a cleaner. She is being treated very badly because the manager/assistant manager feels that she isn't working to a good standard. She simply can't reach the standard they are looking for. She is often left alone to clean the whole building, she is constantly criticised and is now suffering from anxiety and depression. How can she get an assessment so she can get the support she needs.?

Hello CommunitySupport

Your friend sounds like she needs some support with this. She is very fortunate to have a friend like you looking out for her.

You could ring our helpline (0808 808 1111) on her behalf. Or she could call herself is she is comfortable doing that. You can also email the helpline on helpline@mencap.org.uk - perhaps you could help her to write the email - it can be easier than talking on the phone for some people.

The helpline is free and they have trained advisors who will be able to help find local support. You can ask about anything - so ask about your friend's job, But also ask about support for other aspects of her life as she might be missing out on help there too.

It would also be worth your friend seeing their GP about getting a diagnosis.

Best of luck
