Housing Solution Desperately Needed

Hi, I am knew to this support group and not sure if my situation is relevant.

My 34 year old son lives independently, he has ADHD and Autism. If I do not go round to clean his house it doesn't get cleaned. He is not looking after himself in terms of washing etc. I am 62 and work full time. Last year I had cancer and although I am now ok it has made me think of what will happen if anything happens to me.

Due to not looking after the property, the landlord is now asking him to move out. He private rents and is currently on the council housing list but there is a long waiting list. Is there any help out there in such situations? Would sheltered housing be an option?

I really don't know where to turn. He claims ESA and I know another private rent will require admin fees and deposits.

Hello Jennywren422

Welcome. It is so good that you are there to support your son, and help him find housing that suits his needs. It sounds as if he, and you, need more support that you are currently getting.

Have you been in touch with the local council - have they been helpful?

Mencap may also be able to help. Call our helpline on 0808 808 1111. They will be able to give you advice and information about what support we can offer you, and what is available in your area.

Please let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Sarah

Hi Sarah, thank you for this information, it is definitely something I will follow up on. I have been that busy trying to find him another place to live, I haven't logged on for a good while. With all the stress and talk of having to move, his mood has hit an all time low and I am trying desperately to get him to complete the applications etc. I will phone mencap on Monday. Thanks again

Hi Jennywren422 , this sounds so tough and you must be exhausted worrying about it all. You are doing the best you can and all you want is for your son to have a clean, safe place to live - something everybody wants and deserves. As Sarah has said, the Mencap advice line are great - and I would also recommend contacting your local authority and asking for an assessment of his needs. He may be eligible for care and support (e.g. someone coming over to prompt/assist him to wash and dress? I appreciate this may be difficult if he doesn't take to new people though...). The local authority can also give you an assessment of your needs as a carer, and provide you with support if you want to continue in that role. They can also talk to you about an 'emergency plan'. So if you are generally happy with providing him support and don't feel you need anything else, just something in place for emergencies, they should be able to discuss this with you.

Have a look at these letter templates from Irwin Mitchell Solicitors to help you with

Keep in touch on here and let us know how it goes. You're not alone - many parents are in similar situations with their adult sons/daughters and it can be really hard. All the best, Fx

Hi, thank you for this. He has recently been assessed when applying for PiP. The assessors decided that he didn't require any help. I have appealed and we are awaiting a court date. Not sure what exactly what the criteria is they use!

I will definitely make contact with them though as any help would be so welcome right now. Thank you so much for your advice, it is very welcome I can assure you.
