Good morning all!

Happy new week, and new month!!! Where is this year going? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜Š

Speaking of new things, I have just invested in my VERY FIRST GARMIN! Scream!!! Never had a running watch before, and I couldn't resist going out for an unscheduled 3 km run to try it out when it arrived on Friday ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

But gosh it was hot!! Last week I once again pulled from the wardrobe a set of three little summer dresses I must have had for at least 10 years. They are made of hydrocarbons and I suppose they'll last forever - so I may as well carry on wearing them every summer!

Have you tried something new recently? Or broken out the tried and true? ๐Ÿ˜Š

Sometimes we don't feel like putting a whole post up but just want to share something small, so this is a great place for doing that during the week. Please join in the discussion!

If you're new or a lurker this is a great place to say a little hi without the pressure of a full post.

Happy running!

Sqkr & roseabi

Well done getting the Garmin. Prepare to be amazed and awash with stats!

Iโ€™m starting to get Ultra envy. I watched some of the live stream of the Mont Blanc marathon and, although me and that terrain just wouldnโ€™t get on, it has made me contemplate some day long running. I know Iโ€™m still to weak in the core to pull that off but itโ€™s a thought thatโ€™s just going to niggle away at me.

Iโ€™ve got a fairly full Autumn of trail running ahead but I might aim for a marathon or an Ultra in 2020.

Enjoy your next run, everyone x

Thanks Jay xxx

I recommend the Beachy Head Marathon! It's like a mini ultramarathon with some serious hills - but the terrain is mostly nice and soft, the support is great, and it has a very generous 9 hour cut off time ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi Roseabi's. At the other end of the scale to everyone else, I have now completed 10, 11 and 12ks over the past three weeks on the way up to my target of a 10 miler. I ran the latter two on a very hilly holiday island, so when the travel fatigue (sitting around on a boat and trains) disappears I ought to be good to go for the next phase. This week has designated "strength training" on your plan rather than a 13k plus run. I guess this is to avoid too much new distance running on ill prepared legs. I do strength exercises daily anyway, so am tempted to just carry on with the long runs....unless you are really saying that a week off at this stage is a good idea anyway? Good luck with the Garmin! I would be lost without mine...I waste/invest loads of time looking at the data and it has really influenced the way I run....stride length, pace and average heart rate in particular. ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

roseabi profile image
roseabiUltramarathon in reply to Beachcomber66

Hi! And thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

The reason why there is not a long run every week of the plan is to allow for more than one day of rest between the non-optional runs.

Btw, I made a few small edits to the plan - have changed the name of the "Pace" run to make it clearer, and have added some more info about pacing in the notes:

Ah, it's you crashing the Garmin/Strava system then roseabi !

Activities are failing to sync automatically from Garmin Connect to Strava. It seems to be a general problem as I'm not the only one affected.

In other news, I have a rotten stinking cold, chest infection, earache, etc so very unlikely to attend my weekly 10k club run this evening โ˜น

Ooh, feel better soon. I read about the Garmin/ strava isssues yesterday, but my ride synced ok last night at about 7pm, and a workout this morning. Maybe it's fixed now, or maybe it just didn't affect everyone? Hope yours is fixed now.

My Strava account has become disconnected but as I'm not doing any exercise today I can wait a day and see if it resolves itself.

Morning everyone! I donโ€™t have one yet, but I sense one in my future - but I was sitting next to a lovely lady on the Park and Ride bus back to my car after running the Bristol 10k Race for Life yesterday (posted about it on B210K if you need help getting to sleep ๐Ÿ˜ด), and she was proudly showing me her hydration vest.

It was made by Aonijie, Iโ€™d never heard of it, but she said it was awesome. Anyone have one, or are there better ones out there you could recommend. I see thereโ€™s an Amazon Prime sale coming up soon ...... oops! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

It is a value brand but an excellent starter. I opted for the Salomon Agile set 2 which is pricier but use it all the time now. Hi Roseabi,

The only thing new for me is trying one of the 'Headspace' runs on Nike run Club yesterday. I'd recommend them every now and again, particularly when things get stressful.

I've got a fairly quiet week running-wise this week, with just a 'Pace 5-10K' planned tomorrow, then a 5K at Bognor Parkrun on Saturday. After that I'm off to hopefully sunny Weymouth for a couple of days, taking in a steam fair (traction engines and other boy's toys I'm afraid!) then back home and running again next Monday.

Happy running everyone!

Ooh, new tech! Exciting! Whatcha got?

Me and my Garmin have had a falling out this morning. It ran out of battery 19km into my run, after having been left charging for hours. Itโ€™s now saying itโ€™s 100% charged after being plugged in for less than 2 hours. ๐Ÿค” Iโ€™m suspicious that something might be going awry with the deeply annoying charge point on the back of the watch and/or the battery. Cโ€™mon Garmin, itโ€™s 2019 - just put a micro USB port on the bloody thing.

Apart from that, the run felt really good today. Not too hot really and I could have carried on going.

Have a good week all.

Wow Abi, that is a big shift for you! I am amazed youโ€™ve managed without one given all your experience. I suspect youโ€™ll enjoy it. More data!

Itโ€™s been business as usual for me. Still trying to maintain my distances on the local trails. The new Kinvaras are solid shoes and on the nearby track they do feel quite fast. Its been very hot here lately so harder to snag any pbs. I did get a new hydration vest and have posted about it to help anyone looking to decide on one. I just need to figure out how to fully dry the massive drink straw it comes with ๐Ÿ˜. Have a shorter trail race in late coming up in late July too which Iโ€™m looking forward too. Today is Canada Day and a national holiday, with a tall ships event at harbourfront, so we will likely go and check that out today.

Stay cool and shady everyone, the heat there sounds intense! ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Decidedly envious of everyone working thru their HM plans as I keep deleting scheduled runs from mine ๐Ÿคข Had my MRI yesterday, hopefully results this week. I'm desperate to put some numbers (๐Ÿคฉ) to the next few months so I can set some realistic expectations - always looking for a clearly defined goal. In the meantime I racked up - and enjoyed - over 300km of cycling in June (not bad progression from zero), and I'm now discovering the delights (?) of seated abs and cardio workouts ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ but maybe not enjoying that so much!

I love my Garmin 35 Abi - except for its VO2 max calculations - I think it just randomly plucks numbers out of the air ๐Ÿ˜‚

Was supposed to do 6x440m this morning with a target time of 2 mins per rep but it's too bloomin hot for that so went for a stroll instead. Am considering a long slow run tomorrow morning in place of speedwork to top up the tan ๐Ÿ˜Ž

They are great but confusing at first!

Well I hit July's goal of a 20 miler yesterday so kinda messed up my plan but it does mean I'll continue to consolidate around the 19/20 mark. It was tough the last few miles so I want to get my body used to those kind of runs on a regular basis.

My original plan of being able to run to the Downs from my door has been perfect though and at 20 miles I get a good explore in too!

Congratulations on the new watch. I did quite fancy getting a watch for running and swimming, but have decided against it. Maybe next year. I have just forked out for a second hand sportive bike from Cranks. This is trying something new as I haven't ridden a racing type bike since the late 80s ๐Ÿคฃ going to take a while to get used to it. I've signed up for a Aquathon at pells pool. 300m swim and 3k run, never done that before, nervous about swimming in a group in a pool, but it looks like an inclusive event. Also signed up for a 10 mile mince pie run in December, exciting as it's on trails and road. And I believe there will be mince pies . My running has been a bit on the back burner recently, but I'm back on it and working my way up again, with cross training and strength work, this group is a great one for motivation and tips. Love to the runners ๐Ÿ˜€

I love my running watch, I've had it for about 4-5 years now. It's the most reliable thing I've ever bought, you just can't break it. I've jumped off cliffs into water, I've fallen onto rocks... it hasn't got a scratch on it. Love it.

Anyway...

๐Ÿ˜ฌ My knees are hurting today! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ๐Ÿ˜ง๐Ÿ˜ฉ *foreboding music* I'm used to a few pains, I've been running through them without any problems, but I haven't had it in my knees before. Slightly concerned because I'm very close to my 10k race and I really wanted to up the intensity in the next few weeks and then taper... Hopefully they'll be fine in a couple of days with some ice on them.

So I might be trying something new this month.. Swimming! Nice weather for it and I have an amazing outdoor 50 metre swimming pool close to me. You hear that knees!? You're not ruining my day, why can't you be more like my watch!?

Things are looking up. After several weeks of lower mileage than I'd hoped, and definitely short long runs, I managed a proper 14 km today. I kept thinking something was wrong, because my pace was way better than usual. I've now decided not to question it, and just be happy. It also turns out that it's my fastest long run in years. So much for my constant moaning that my running isn't what it used to be!

I'm going to do my first Norwegian parkrun outside Oslo this weekend. It's a 3.5 hour drive away, so we'll spend the night somewhere close by. The kids aren't thrilled, and my youngest made the wise move to volunteer instead.

Hi Roseabi and all you great people. Iโ€™ve had a poor start to my HM training last week. Managed 3 good runs from 2 Sundayโ€™s ago to last Sunday. 25km in all but all on weekend days. No cross training or strength training.... I started a new job so struggled to get everything in sync. Hopefully things settle down and Iโ€™m hoping to get some runs during lunch times soon. Weekday strength training might have to be done at home. No idea what to do as cross training yet.

Well done!! And congrats on the new job - hope it's going well?

Cross training - what do you enjoy doing? We tend to choose lower-impact activities (less of the jumping/hopping) to compliment the running: walking, swimming, cycling, yoga/pilates. You could make your strength work part of your cross training too - a lot of yoga poses work on strength, or there's good old fashioned gym workouts of course ๐Ÿ˜„

Cross training is not mandatory, just highly recommended ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š
