It’ll have to be a combination of everything for me but special mention for the bling!

Beachcomber66 profile image

No surprise there!!🙂

Exactly my thought too IP! Heavily weighted towards the bling! 😂😂

A combination of a few of these . Also, I like something booked for a few months ahead to make sure that I keep running consistently.

Irishprincess profile image

Definitely a great idea!

That’s what I like too, I found I was disappointed with my first HM race so I booked another later in the year so I have something to work towards and won’t lose my distance I’ve been building.

I love my training plans and ticking off the runs but that’s a fairly recent development as I use to avoid plans like the plague!

Dendev75 profile image

Nothing more satisfying than ticking runs off a plan ☺️

Ummmm yep me too! Xxx

Some colourful bling !

Those colours are fabulous! xxx

You’ve given me an idea aliboo. I might rearrange my bling in colour order. Yours looks like a rainbow. 🌈😍

It's not intentional! But yes it does,I'll have to do it properly! Xxx

rainbow colours 🌈

Decent bling is often a big motivator (here’s looking at you Local Landmarks virtual 10k, with its opening telephone box!) but not as big as it used to be.

Ooh, definitely a combination ... but mostly the challenge I think. Who knew I would become someone who likes a challenge 😍

R4inbow profile image

Generally for the location/route. Or for the challenge.

I’m not that keen on the bling 🤭 I do like a good t shirt though

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toR4inbow

You can have most of my teeshirts R4inbow. I have loads but only wear a handful. I prefer the plant a tree option if it’s an option. 🌳

R4inbow profile image
R4inbowUltramarathon in reply tocheekychipmunks

I often wish I could pay to plant a tree instead of the medal and keep the t shirt!!

😅😅

I was thoroughly chuffed that neither of the two events I've done had a medal R4inbow . At the first I got a jar of powdered local cep mushrooms, at the second quality socks and a technical tee-shirt. Far more use to me than yet more clutter.

Irishprincess profile image

One person’s clutter, another person’s treasure 🙂

R4inbow profile image

It is fun how we all like different things, I did a race once where I got socks at the end, was very happy with that!

Dendev75 profile image

I got socks at the end of a race with an eco wooden medal, I love the socks 🥰

I said "for the challenge", but just to be clear that's not about doing well in the event itself, as I have been known to come last! It's more about keeping me motivated in my day to day running.

Joster profile image
JosterHalf Marathon in reply toKalessin

This is me 100%. The target of a race day or miles per month is what motivates me, without a target I tend to flounder..... But I am a bit of a sucker for a t shirt or a medal, even a virtual one!

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toKalessin

Great answer!

Because I am tad loopy :) But a chance to meet up with VRBs cannot be missed :) x

I’ve never run in an event but hubby signed us up for a HM in April. I don’t know whether I will like it but I do enjoy running with people at park run. It makes me run faster so I voted for the challenge. ❤️

Teresa1632 profile image

I've voted "for the challenge", but if there isn't a nice bit of bling, I'm out! Yes, I am that shallow 😅

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toTeresa1632

Me too. If there’s no bling then I won’t enter…

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toTeresa1632

I’m shallow in that respect too Teresa! 😅

David_G profile image

It has to be a combination for me too. I need motivation to keep me going and everyone I’ve met on a run has been friendly and supportive! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

nowster profile image

Apart from parkrun, I only do events if it's as part of a social group (eg. colleagues). I prefer to run solo for most of the time.

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy510 Miles

A combination for me too, but I’d give up the bling just for the experience of being part of a happy band of runners. Nice location is definitely in there too. New Forest, London Landmarks, Severn Bridge ……

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toDexy5

Give. Up. Bling. 😨

Dexy5 profile image
Dexy510 Miles in reply tocheekychipmunks

I know. 🥹 but I would rather do an event with lots of lovely runners and no medal, than a virtual run with a medal.

No prizes for guessing my vote!

A combination of several, but with VRB meet ups at the top, although I’m a sucker for bling 🤑😂

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon

I went for VRB meet up. Something has to explain a 13 hour plus round trip and two nights away from home to run the GSR ! The medal came as a surprise; I had actually forgotten about the bling until I staggered into the finishing tent post run! Nice medal to have though. I think I am in a post materialistic phase.

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessAdministratorHalf Marathon in reply toBeachcomber66

A “post materialistic phase” I so wish I could be in that phase too…. *sigh*

Beachcomber66 profile image

Maybe it is an age thing. As a school kid I really coveted an MGB GT owned by one of my teachers, but even then I thought that by the time I could afford one I probably wouldn’t want it! Turned out to be true 🙄

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toIrishprincess

Not sure I know that phrase when it relates to bling ……. no bling, no enter!

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toBeachcomber66

Would you be up for another BC? 😀

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66AdministratorHalf Marathon in reply tocheekychipmunks

In principle yes, it would be really great to see everyone again. I need to make progress on organising an important event first. Home work first 🙂

RunSkippyRun profile image

voted "for the challenge" - not just the challenge on the day but also the objective of working up to it ... and whilst I like a bit of bling (cue disappointed face when found out that Temple Newsam Ten didn't have any bling this year 😞) I also like a T-shirt to wear at the next parkrun / clubrun (a frequent conversation starter at parkrun)

JonathanP profile image
JonathanP10 Miles

I'm not that keen on events - total after nearly 5 years running GSR x 2, so it had to be meeting up with VRBs. The bling's OK on the day, but after that? I've got too much clutter already!😀

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toJonathanP

That’s where a handy bling hanger comes in handy Jonathan. Keeps them all off cluttered surfaces. 😀

JonathanP profile image

I’d like to think I do it for the bling but it’s really really hard to come by in masters athletics. I’m working on it though. Hopefully a medal soon. For now it’s the challenge which is my motivation. Me vs the clock.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksHalf Marathon in reply toRunBrianRun

Your bling involves a podium too I suspect Brian. Now that would be really special. 😍

RunBrianRun profile image
RunBrianRunHalf Marathon in reply tocheekychipmunks

One day. Maybe 🤔😂

Cmoi profile image
CmoiMarathon in reply toRunBrianRun

That's the sort of bling that I consider meaningful RunBrianRun - you earn a podium place, you deserve a medal. Getting one for just turning up and doing the distance you'd committed to doing in the first place seems really odd to me.

Curlygurly2 profile image
Curlygurly2Half Marathon

I'm not that keen on real events, I'm always way behind everyone else - I know you will all say it doesn't matter and finishing is what counts, but at my last event the finish arch had been deflated and there was no one to give me my medal let alone a cheering party as I crossed the line.

Virtual events on the other hand....I love a virtual challenge! I can still challenge myself, but do it at my own time and place, and I'll never be last!!

Marymumto2 profile image

It needs to be a challenge or fun. and there needs to be a medal. It’s all about the bling. The crowd support etc is not that important to me.

Dendev75 profile image
Dendev75Half Marathon

I enjoy running in new locations - always exciting not knowing a place. I love bling but ran a 5 mile race yesterday that didn’t have any medal or goodies just because it was my first ever race last year and I wanted to try and beat my own time (which I did by 3.5 mins) ☺️
