I would love a PB always! I want to get fitter, and hell yes I want to look cool (well as far as possible!). And, really, why not? π
I would like a PB, I have an ongoing rivalry with someone (everyone), and why would I not? π
The rivalry is mostly with male work colleagues, who instead of asking how I felt after an event, or how I thought it went, or even if I enjoyed it, always jump straight to 'what was your finish time'. π It's a point of contention for me that I am unlikely to surpass them because I am a woman and they are men and so have a natural physical advantage, but I'm going to flipping well keep trying.
You should give them your age/gender graded score and will probably blow them out the water! And yeah you will go faster than them someday but you are probably already doing better than them
i want to be able to hold my own at group runs as at the minute im one ( if not the slowest ) on our long runs ! would be nice to be able to run with people instead of at the back on my own lol !
Go you! How are you?
im REALLY well and on week 4 of marathon training ( new years day ) eeek and woooo at the same time , also have a couple races coming up that i havent told you about for the role call haha X i do dip in and out of here always makes me smile
I've been working on my speed for the last few weeks to try and get a PB at the weekend event (Leeds Castle 10k). But the distance measured short on Strava so no 10k time recorded. Boo hoo
Was it chip timed? If so use the time you got from the race. You can even put it as a personal record on strava and link to the results page for the race.
PB, get fitter, thinking about next olympic trials, Why would I not, other. 2 need explaining, I still want to get a world record, even if I will never get one, haha, just getting anywhere near OT pace is insanity but I am insane. Problem is I need to be a little more insane every month as my progress isn't promising
Other, I don't know if I can explain it, but there's a drive in me to go faster. I enjoy running without that too, I often go on a run becasue I want to, even though I know it will lead to overtraining and slow me down. Actually pretty soon I will be doing something that will slow my running down a lot over a short period - permanantly. Literally knocking about 2 minutes off my 5k PB. I will talk about it soon I hope. Its a good thing though and I will be happy about it. And I will enjoy running still. And I will strive to get back to the same speeds and faster.
I've a goal to break the hour mark for a 10k race. After that to nibble away to see if I can get down to a 55min 10k.
Really good question!
Is it still human nature to strive to be better? I used to think it was, not so sure now, but that's a different question... That's kind of why I want to go faster though.
Pace is a great measure of progress. Quicker over a known route = improvement. Pushing distance is too, obviously. But it's the quicker runs that make me think I'm getting better. And why wouldn't you want to get better?
I got the idea for this poll because someone asked the question the other day, and my first thought was "why wouldn't you?". But then I realised it was quite a bit more complex than that. For example, I find running faster is really uncomfortable, and it's easy to just say things like - "I'm a marathoner, so I do a lot of long slow runs!" and do just that. But of course, I do speed work too, and I know in my heart of hearts I am disappointed if my race results aren't getting faster.
And the poll goes well with the new Challenge of course π
Thatβs one of the ingredients linked with motivational challenges. I wanted to run 5K under 30min but thatβs now pushed to under 25. 10K in less than an hour and completing longer distances in reasonable comfort but still being pushed, that is all linked with speed and good results are your true reward, and proof that after having put in some long hours and hard work you can look back and see what youβve done. Of course, knowing your limits is imperative but there is something cool about being able to fire away like a gazelle!
Seriously though: I donβt come in last. Thatβs just it.
I voted βotherβ as itβs not really about speed for me, Iβd like to be a bit more efficient...e.g more comfortable....Iβm always happy if I improve on my times...but there are many other factors, Iβve recently improved my cardio vascular fitness by cycling (I donβt like hills much on my bike, they make me say rude things....π€¬π±) but, in turn my running has got slightly more comfortable, and I have noticed a slight increase in my pace .....so i keep on with the cycling.....ππ΄ββοΈ

I love the image of you saying rude things on your bike π
So I don't hold up the others at running club... Which I haven't been to for ages because I'm too slow!
I've been wondering - aren't running clubs supposed to be inclusive, and to help people improve their speed?
Yes, they are, and to some degree it works well. Tuesday runners are the fastest group, followed by the Thursday bunch. Wednesdays is 4 or 5 miles, whatever fits into an hour for the more leisurely but time restricted folk. Sunday is the long slow run. But... Even the slowest group has stragglers, and if I'm holding folks up, I feel they aren't getting a decent run in because of me (even though they just loop back to keep their mileage up). So ideally, I'd like to be at a fitting pace and distance before going back. I don't know if others feel like that.
I also have huge issues with confidence. If I fail on my own, it doesn't matter, but in a group... silly really, but a personal battle almost every run.
Personal achiebevement, sense of satisfaction, measurable way of knowing you are improving... desire to get to a level where you donβt just do it.. but are perceived as being good at it! I run for the love of running....but as a bonus thereβs nothing better afterwards than seeing a great time !
I want to get fitter and why would I not? were my two answers. I really enjoy exercise that pushes me - I actually find it really fun.
I really enjoy speed work on the track and at efforts sessions I go to at running club. I love seeing the low numbers these sessions produce and it makes me believe I can run a whole 5k faster - my goal is to achieve a sub26 min parkrun within the next few weeks.
I find the psychology of running very interesting in that the group I run with on a Wednesday is very fast and I'm always at the back. Everyone is lovely and loops back for me but I find it psychologically very difficult and often want to stop. On Friday I went out with a different group and was at the front and looping back for the slower runners and could have run all day! The pace difference was only about 30 secs per km and we stop a lot more on the faster 10k so it's definitely psychological.
Need to keep reminding myself I've only been running for 6 months and there's still a lot of time to improve x
I guess all, but chose other.
Love your replies.
I think the perceived wisdom that improved pace translates into distance at a run all day pace and vice versa is reason enough for me.
Also aside, for every one hour of running, seven extra hours of life π€.
Whatβs not to like.π₯πββοΈπββοΈπ₯βοΈ
It's fun to see how fitter I'm getting, kind of "attaboy" and Pat on the back though you feel like you're going to imminently swallow your tongue 'cos your breathing so hard
Mitochondria replacement,VO2 max increase, more ability to remain healthier, fight off disease and live longer.π₯πββοΈπββοΈπ₯
I ran "fast" when I started on c25k (like an idiot, eyes on stalks and red-faced) because I thought "Run!" meant run. I slowly learned to jog instead of run as I worked up through c25k to b210k HM and finally the marathon. Now I've got the gist of endurance I want to revisit "speed" and see if I can coax a 56 year old shell along at the old "fast" pace for 5k then 10k and so on. Currently focussed on a sub 5:00 min/k paced 5k to start with.
Go Gary.Love the description π€ππ But would be more pleased if you can find what you want to find.I believe our bodies remember well and perhaps reproduce some of that ability.π₯πββοΈπ₯βοΈ
You are formidable runner Gary.β¨
