Flickering scotoma

I have been seeing a blind spot on the right side of my eye close to my central vision . The spot is a flickering of light and like a pinwheel. What could be the cause.

Hi Momo2424

If your eyesight has changed or deteriorated recently, it is best to seek advice from either your opthamologist or your optician as they will be best equipped to assess your eye health and determine the cause.

Thanks

I too have the scintillating scotoma occasionally and have to wait for it to clear, maybe 10 minutes or so, before I can see clearly again. I have wet AMD in both eyes and have lost central vision in one but having Lucentis injections in the other . I have experienced the scotoma episodes for many years, long before AMD was diagnosed.

Hi Hrosie, Is scintillating scotoma like the "flashing triangles" that I occasionally experience? mine also last about 10 minutes, but are in the periphery, not in my central vision. Also did you have injections in the eye that lost central vision? And is the lost central vision a dark spot or white faded area?

Hello Ikansea - Yes the scintillating scotoma is the flashing zigzaggy triangular lines in the periphery of my vision. I don't know if it is associated with the AMD because it's something I've experienced for many years long before the AMD. I did not have injections in my right eye that lost central vision - that occurred because the optician at the time told me it was dry AMD & could not be treated - also it didn't affect my vision very much at the time so I went a whole year to next appointment during which time it had turned wet & my central vision had deteriorated. I noticed distortion in the vision of my left eye some time later so had an emergency appointment at the eye clinic & was told it was start of wet AMD & would need injection treatment. I've continued with the treatment now for about two years & managed to keep the vision in that eye although not perfect. In my right eye I have lost central vision but have some peripheral vision - the central vision is a grey/white faded area. Hope this helps you. Take care.

Thank you, yhank you, Hrosie. Yes, that helps tremendously!

Unfortunately, I'm developing that grey/white faded area in my injected eye. I still have my "good:" (not very) right eye that allows me to read and drive in town, which I would not be able to do if both eyes were the same.

BUT, I guess I will opt to keep on with the injections as I still have some central vision. It's been just short of 2 years that I have recieved injections. First Avastin, then Eylea. The retinal specialist said it was up to me, but if it were he, he would continue. Thanks again for your kind response

Hi I have this too. Currently being treated as CSR, but to me this flickering pinwheel (good way to describe it) isn’t a typical symptom of CSR. I associate it with a new leak. Good luck with finding answers.

Should have added the flickering is worse when I look from light (eg window) into room and lasts a few seconds but is often repeated many times. It was the 1st symptom I had which led to CSR diagnosis

Hi all, know it is an old post but I was wondering the outcome of this flickering light in middle of patch? My mum has Wet AMD and had her first injection 4 weeks ago.
