Hi, You need to call the excellent Macular Society helpline on 0300 303 0111 for a proper discussion. They have been very helpful to me. As you know CNV is the wet form of macular degeneration and needs treatment as soon as you notice disturbance of your vision, preferably within just two or three days maximum. The scarring is the blood vessels that grow to try and help the cells that are malfunctioning, but they leak and break, then you cannot see through them. Sometimes the injections just stops the leak, but sometimes the damage gets a bit better too.

Best of luck, David

Hello, I have myopic CNV with scarring too, in my right eye. It can affect very young people and like everyone in this community, a diagnosis affecting vision is frightening.

I am 62 but very active and fit with a positive outlook on life! In Feb 2013, I had an original diagnosis of dry AMD atrophy and drusen and then 2 months later I had laser treatment for a retinal tear; a couple of months later I began to see distorted lines and shapes and letters were jumping about on top of each other. Suspecting it to be rapid onset of wet AMD, I was diagnosed with myopic CNV scarring due to a weak or thinning retina, and some weeks later started a course of Avastin and then Lucentis injections - I have now had 7. Unfortunately, once the scarring has occurred which it does quickly with myopic CNV, it can't be reversed but the injections help to dry any active leaking blood vessels which would cause further scarring. I am lucky that I see my eye specialist at the hospital every 4 weeks so that both eyes are scanned regularly, also that they were willing to start injections before approval - only approved by NICE in Nov 2013.

I hope you are receiving good treatment. I agree that you hear a lot about AMD but not so much about myopic CNV but this helpline is very good and supportive - there is always someone on the end of the phone to listen and advise. There are a few good websites which explain the condition and treatment well too. Good luck, you are not alone - although challenging, it's important to stay positive.

Hello Caddy45,

CNV is an abbreviation for Choroidal Neovascularisation, or wet macular degeneration.

The previous 2 posts give you some more information. A scar occurs when the leakage of blood, which is wet MD, scars over.

If you would like a chat, please call the Macular Society helpline on 0300 30 30 111 (9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday).

Best wishes

Yes my left eye is still OK - shortsighted since my teens but not developed myopic CNV as my right has. Lucentis was not licensed in the UK for myopic CNV till last November. Avastin was the choice of my doctor before that.
