Lynch Syndrome UK

Screening - colonoscopy

Screening for cancer of the large bowel (colon) and rectum in the UK is with COLONOSCOPY. It starts at 25 years* and continues every 1-2 years until at least 75yrs. All gene mutation groups in LS should have this done.

* Some families do need to start sooner

* Some genetic centres advise later start at 30yrs for MSH6 and PMS2

COLONOSCOPY UK guidelines currently in use can be found at Vasen et al 2013 and British Society Gastroenterology 2010.

If available, blue dye should be used because it increases the pick up rate of small lesions in colonoscopy for LS by 50% (Monahan K).

Colonoscopies that are not completed should be repeated soon afterwards - not left until next screening date.
