New to low carbs high fat programme

Hi,

I have been obese most of my life, apart from a period of about 14 years between my 16 and 30, when I could keep excess weight at bay just by starving most days. I think that was the beginning of my eating disorders: restrictive anorexia, mainly, in combination with some binge eating. However, I have never developed behaviour patterns which are associated with bulimia. That way, I managed to keep a weigh which oscillated between 58 and 64 kg (considered normal for my height and age at that time). 31 years ago, during pregnancy of my only son, I grew up to 100 kg. After he was born I quickly lost about 25 kg. and from then on, until now (I am 63) it was a yo-yo but always going back to a bit higher and higher on the lower part of the yo-yo. Thus, 15 years ago I was weighing 80 kg and today it-s 116. So, I am currently carrying the weight of two human beings and my heart, bones and general health are suffering the consequences.

Having so many kilos to lose, diets restricted in calories don't work with me. Three weeks ago I started the low carbs, high-fat diet recommended by NHS. On the first week, I lost 3 kg. and I got stuck there. What is more, I put on one more kilo in the last 2 weeks. I don't know what I am doing wrong. One of the things I did not want to give up was my 1 piece of Weetabix for breakfast, as it helps me a lot with my toilet routine. However, there are 13 g of carbs in a single piece! So, from today onwards I will go without my Weetabix and I am worried about a disruption in my toilet routine. What would be good to flush my system regularly?

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Hi and welcome, Bluna1 :)

Maybe these could help?

Generally, increase fluid intake, add seeds like chia to your diet, salt your food, exercise regularly and eat more leafy greens.

I hope this helps :)

Many thanks Moreless. I'll do the chia seeds and more water intake, which is definitely my failure with this programme. I don't feel thirsty and simply forget to drink.

I agree with the advice from Moreless. If that is not enough, you can also try psyllium husks as a fibre supplement. I get mine online from Lepicol.com, and they are a course ground husk to take in water (I add a little juice to make them taste better!). You can also get it in powder form.

Depending on how low carb you are going you could also try adding a couple of dried prunes cut up and added into full fat yoghurt. I make my own and have 100g/day with the prunes (most days) and 5 or 6gms of chia seeds, I usually add a few gms of real cocoa too. I put it together the previous evening or early morning for later in the day. Chia comes as milled (so fine) or as seeds which swell up a bit. I like either but you may need to try both to get a preference.

Hi Bluna1, just wanted to wish you good luck. I have a similar diet history to you. I am 57, I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have had two total hip replacements, the last one a year ago, due to carrying too much excess weight around.I started with LCHF with IF a couple of months ago, it has greatly reduced my binge eating and got me back on track for weight loss. I am not that knowledgable yet, but am happy to chat.😊

I find since starting LCHF I am in my second week. I have never been so regular. I think boosting the healthy fat, cream, butter, oil and eating avocado, spinach, seed cracker ( that I have made) along with seeds and nuts . I add salt to my meals.

If I have fruit it is strawberries/ berries or stoned fruit, with double cream - delicious!

Drinks lots of water.

My body is running like it should be.

So cutting carbs to 25g - is just perfect for me
