Has anyone experimented with fasting and IPT? Supposedly fasting 5 days resets the immune system.

My hematologist told me with ITP the healthier your immune system the faster it'll destroy your platelets...and I personally feel there's truth to it in my case...I'm a healthy eater, but when I go all healthy and take high quality multi supplements my platelets drop some...not hugely, but between 10k-15k, but it's a lot if you're already low...so, oddly enough I stopped taking all supplements ... and I eat about 70% organic... I do take 24 mgs prednisone daily and tapering quarter mg every three weeks and my platelets are hanging between 65k-78k now for about 6 months.. they have dropped to 14k in the past...please keep me posted if you decide to do the fast...best wishes...🤗

All manner of anti-inflamatory foods are on the list of foods that are bad for ITP; blueberries, tumeric, ginger, green tea. garlic, etc. After diagnosis I stopped these foods and raised my platelet count from 37 to 64. I am now on 20 mg dexamethasone every 2 week and 'indulging' in healthy, anti-inflamatory foods to try to keep other parts of my body healthy. The dexamethasone keeps my platelets in a safe range (they had gone down to 11), but, of course, they diminish over the 2 weeks.

That's great that specific food eliminations have helped you... I was unable to cope with the side effects of the Dexamethasone...I'm feeling for myself anything in moderation is okay, but I do watch everything that I eat with scrutiny...it's hard not to with this condition...I feel that my platelet levels are controlled by the prednisone mostly...I'm hoping to get down to between 7.5-10 mgs and still be within safe levels, as my hematologist says he'd feel comfortable with my taking that area of dose for maintenance...next in either Promacta, nplate, or rituxan... I'd rather stay with pred at lower dose if possible...this is definitely a challenging condition...💜🤗💜

Thanks EatPrayLove65,

It Is challenging. Dexamethasone really did me in when I first took it -- all the nasty side effects you can imagine. I'm now on 20mg only every 2 weeks which seems to be working although I haven't been on it very long -- so we'll see.

All the best,

I did two DeX pulse...and I honestly thought I wasn't going to survive them...I kept going into adrenal crisis...and was so painful coming off...I now have nodules in both adrenal glands, so hematologist says there's a big chance I'll need prednisone for life at low dose if my adrenals are not going to work properly when I get to lower dose...hoping they're okay...best wishes to you...🤗

I tried everything for ITP and nothing worked. I self diagnosed that I had Lyme disease which my natural path confirmed. Fasting is the only that works for me. 3 days is sufficient and often I’ll do one meal a day. My platelets are at 80 consistently. Before they were down to 11.

I only did one 4 day decadrone stint and that kicked my ass. I was so depressed.

Someone on here told me it was the decadrone blues.

If you fast just put 1/2 teaspoon of Himalayan salt . 1/2 teaspoon of No Salt and 1/2 ts baking soda in 2 liters of water.

It will keep you hydrated. I also add a splash of ACV

Thank you for your commitment! I just finished 5 days and included coffee, water with Himalayan salt a little bit of no salt and herb teas. I won't get tested for another couple months but we'll see what the numbers are then and I'll keep everybody updated.

Fasting will not reset your immune system!!!! There is no cure at this time only management but research is ongoing. Check out this site’s educational section and learn as much as you can about our disease, the more you know the better the care will receive. Be well:)

Hi, is that comment based on the experience of you or somebody that you know that has tried fasting? Be well, tom

No, I have not tried fasting to “reset” my immune system as there is nothing in the medical literature to support that claim I however, know that fasting causes increased stress on the body which has a negative impact on the immune system. I don’t know how long you have dealing with ITP but you must have noticed the your platelets drop with stressors like: bacteria/viral infections, uncontrolled pain and depression. A healthy, well balanced diet is essential for physical and emotional health. Be well:) Georgia

I cut down on wheat and gluten (to almost none) and have daily fermented foods after reading a few recent scientific reports about diverse gut flora and auto immune disease, including one specifically on ITP. I have been above 120 /in remission ever since.

May I ask what types of fermented foods you consume and are you on meds for ITP? I've been gluten free for over 20 years...sighing...this condition is so frustrating...
